The dark night of the soul

"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." - Joseph Campbell

There are moments in life where everything leads us to rethink ourselves, the old structures no longer define us in the same way they did before and, undoubtedly, there is a collapse of everything that used to work for us. Often, the experiences that mark a "before" and an "after" in our lives are those that activate this higher level of consciousness and lead us to enter the dark night of the soul.

The metamorphosis of the butterfly

The dark night of the soul is a period of introspection filled with pretty much loneliness, uncertainty and pain. Old wounds become conscious of your reality so that you can heal and release them, in this way they will no longer condition you. I give you an example, there are 4 stages in the life cycle of the butterfly, the first is the egg. At this stage the larva of the butterfly grows inside until it’s ready to get out into the outside world, the same happens with us, during the first years of life we are in our "egg", surrounded by our parents and relatives, in our home that, without stopping to check more internally if it was a healthy environment or not, that’s the place that feels "safe" for us at that stage of our lives and that defines a large part of the adult you will be later.

However, there comes a time when we have to go out to explore, to face the real world, to live. At this stage we are like the “larvae” of butterflies, we allow ourselves to change direction, try new things, we dare to begin the process of defining ourselves, but we do based on the familiar patterns that we bring, we try to signify ourselves, but we still don’t have very clear how it works, that is why life begins to place us in situations that shape our character and, eventually, make us enter the chrysalis.

The chrysalis for the butterfly is like our dark night of the soul, a moment when you only have you, for the butterfly this is the most difficult stage and for us it is too. When you are there, you have no other option but to go through the pain, allow yourself to feel it in every part of you, understand where it comes from, because the situation that “detonated” it’s only lighting a shadow that you hadn’t worked on before. It’s then when we remove that skin that isn’t ours, we leave behind those things that previously defined us and that felt like part of us, but that weren’t really aligned with our true selves. The time we spend in the chrysalis is different for everyone, it can be months or years, we must be ready for when we open our wings and dare to show ourselves to the world in a much more authentic way, vibrating from the energy of our own being.

In that moment where we feel ready, where we are no longer conditioned by what people will say, or the family patterns that used to determine my being, at that moment, friend, you got it! And it has been the result of all your internal work. Sometimes we need to lose ourselves, to be able to reconnect with our essence, we need to go through those dark moments to rediscover who you are and what you are made of, isn't it easy? Nobody said it would be, but it is part of being here, of living, of growing up. Gray clouds are also part of the landscape and if you look closely, you will find a lot of beauty there.
