3 Tips on how to study effectively
During their training, medical residents learn countless techniques, surgeries, and procedures which they’ll later use to save lives. Being able to remember these skills can quite literally be a matter of life and death. With this in mind, a 2006 research study took a class of surgical residents learning to suture arteries and split them into two groups. Each received the same study materials, but one group implemented a small change in how they studied them. When tested one month later, this group performed the surgeries significantly better than the other residents. We’ll discuss the secret to that group’s success, along with two other highly effective study techniques which can be applied both in and out of the classroom. But to understand why these methods work, let's first unpack how the brain learns and stores information.

How to stay calm in difficult situations
A few years ago, I broke into my own house. I had just driven home, it was around midnight in the dead of Montreal winter, I had been visiting my friend, Jeff, across town, and the thermometer on the front porch read minus 40 degrees -- and don't bother asking if that's Celsius or Fahrenheit, minus 40 is where the two scales meet -- it was very cold. And as I stood on the front porch fumbling in my pockets, I found I didn't have my keys. In fact, I could see them through the window, lying on the dining room table where I had left them.

Young Scientist Discovers Eco-Friendly Solution to Plastic Waste
In a small, unassuming laboratory tucked away in the heart of a bustling university, a groundbreaking discovery was made that could revolutionize our approach to plastic waste. At just 22 years old, Emma Rodriguez, a graduate student in environmental science, has developed a novel, eco-friendly solution to one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues: plastic pollution. Emma’s journey began during her sophomore year at university. Passionate about environmental conservation since her high school days, she was deeply troubled by the staggering statistics on plastic waste. Millions of tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year, harming marine life and disrupting ecosystems. Determined to make a difference, Emma focused her research on finding a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. Her breakthrough came after two years of relentless experimentation and research. Emma discovered a way to create biodegradable plastic using a combination of agricultural waste and a specific strain of bacteria. This innovative process not only reduces the reliance on fossil fuels but also provides a use for materials that would otherwise be discarded. The key component of Emma’s bioplastic is cellulose, derived from agricultural waste such as corn husks and sugarcane bagasse. By introducing a naturally occurring bacterium, she found a way to convert the cellulose into a biopolymer that mimics the properties of conventional plastic but decomposes naturally within months, rather than centuries. This process is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly, leaving no toxic residue. Emma’s discovery could not have come at a better time. With global plastic production exceeding 380 million tons annually and recycling rates remaining dismally low, her bioplastic offers a promising alternative. The potential impact of her work extends far beyond reducing plastic waste; it also addresses the growing problem of agricultural waste, providing farmers with a new source of income and reducing the environmental burden of waste disposal. The scientific community has taken notice of Emma’s work. Her research paper, published in a leading environmental journal, has garnered widespread acclaim. Dr. James Peterson, a renowned expert in environmental chemistry, lauded her discovery as "a significant leap forward in our quest for sustainable materials." Beyond the accolades, Emma remains grounded and focused on the practical applications of her discovery. She has already begun collaborating with local manufacturers to test the scalability of her bioplastic. Her goal is to see her invention used in everyday products, from packaging materials to disposable cutlery. However, the journey has not been without its challenges. Emma recalls numerous setbacks during her research, including failed experiments and funding difficulties. “There were times I doubted whether I would ever find a solution,” she admits. “But every setback was a learning experience that brought me closer to the breakthrough.” Emma’s resilience and dedication are a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact one individual can have on global issues. Her story has inspired fellow students and researchers at the university, sparking a renewed interest in environmental innovation. Outside the lab, Emma is actively involved in raising awareness about plastic pollution. She frequently speaks at schools and community events, sharing her journey and encouraging others to pursue scientific research. “It’s important to show young people that science can be a powerful tool for change,” she says. “We all have the ability to make a difference.” Looking to the future, Emma is optimistic about the potential of her bioplastic. She envisions a world where single-use plastics are a thing of the past, replaced by sustainable alternatives that do not harm the planet. While there is still much work to be done, her discovery marks a significant step towards this vision. Emma Rodriguez’s story is a beacon of hope in the fight against plastic pollution. Her innovative spirit and unwavering commitment to sustainability remind us that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with determination and ingenuity. As her bioplastic edges closer to commercial reality, the world eagerly awaits the positive changes it promises to bring.
