How To Make New Year's Resolutions That'll Stick
Happy Holidays! It’s Christmas which means that it’s almost New Years. I’m writing this while sitting alone in my empty apartment, precisely 6,366 km away from my family. Now that this year is almost over, I think I can speak for everyone when I say it was a bit grim. You know…pandemic, widespread job loss, online school, death! I admit that I spent much of this year feeling lost and alone and sad and way too introspective. Since this is generally the time of year when people make resolutions, goals and dreams that tend to fall off as soon as February, I thought I’d add to the pot and share a few of my hopes for the new year. And also the tips and tricks that I plan to use to honour them.

Nose on the grindstone
Year 2020 has become one of the years for the gravestone. What did that opinion do for your mindset? I wonder if you’ve given grace to this year and yourself the way I’ve learned to this year. The COVID brought out the survival in us all. Naturally we are defensive, not compassionate. Vulnerability is the gift to humanity that’s often taken for granted, by self or another. We all have been through the ringer this year one way or another. My story? I’ve begun a journey that I’ve manifested due to my dreams and aspirations. Music has not only inspired me to compel forward at each high and low, but I have been able to transcend through the goosebump intimacy I’ve allowed through sound. This feeling is recognized through a sense of comfort, especially in times where we aren’t able to distract ourselves as easily.

The Power of Unplugging
To start this off, let me give you a little backstory on how I discovered the power of unplugging for a day ... The first date I can recall actively leaving all of my technological devices off for an entire 24-hour period is January 21st, 2016. This was my 22nd birthday, and the 1-year anniversary of my cousin’s death.

How to cultivate contentment
For those who may not be familiar, there is a beautiful Sacred text called the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Within this book, there are many powerful tools for learning how to understand ourselves deeper. How our mind works, how the world works, who we are, and how we can create a healthier life present in each moment. A main portion of the book is Patanjali's 8 Limbs of Yoga. Within the 8 Limbs are the Yamas and Niyamas. These essentially are an ethical map with how we can live life by understanding and living each Yama (Restraint) and Niyama (Observance). These 10 guidelines can be compared to the Ten Commandments of the Christian faith or also the Ten Virtues in Buddhism. Each religion around the world carries moral codes and guidelines giving us an opportunity to choose how we respond in each moment.

We're All Different
We should not make life a comparison game. But we do. I am guilty of it myself. Social status is race related now. People do not make it about income, like they should. They feel that if you are a certain race, you have access to better opportunities. It is a stereotype that has stuck in our minds for so long, it is like a tape recording that is we play repeatedly. I call it the race card. Some people call it that too and say that they got the race card pulled on them.

A Seat on the Couch
I started therapy four years ago, and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself. I didn't realize that I had suppressed the pain of my broken heart trying to cope with my mother's sudden death at age 15. I was angry. Bitter. Upset. Confused. However, it was all shielded by accolades and smiles. Just when I thought I was stable, the onset of father's mental illness crippled me even more. I had no idea how to navigate my feelings and digest the new version of him. The absolute worst part- I didn't know how to help him. He needed so much and I felt incapable. I cried frequently. I felt like I was failing him, my family, and myself. Then, I thought a fresh start would renew my spirit, but relocating to Dallas only made me feel more alone. Sadder. Empty. Money wasn't the solution. The distance made matters worse. My biggest mistake? I had created such a "strong woman" facade that no one sought to check on me. If they did, I deflected because vulnerability scared me. Not to mention, sometimes talks with friends and family only infuriated me more. I had the audacity to expect them to know what to say or how to respond about situations they had never endured. This was my spiritual warfare, not theirs.

Awaken your inner child.
The fact that I am even alive to write these words is a blessing in itself. I have spent the majority of my life in darkness, in the hell of my own mind. I have lived in deep separation from my authentic self, clouded with expectations, judgments, fears, and lack of self-worth. The journey is never easy, but I am grateful to be moving forward on my path home. Each day I am finding more of my voice and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. What does it mean to listen to your authentic voice? Who or what even is "your" authentic voice? Who are you, and who am I?

Situational Awareness is the Key to Everyday Life
Situational Awareness is something everyone should actually have when it comes to being out and about with the rest of the general public. Having such a skill will protect you not only in the workplace but also everywhere else you go. It is very important to pay attention to your surroundings everywhere you go, including in your own home. I say in your own home because some of the household items you use everyday are hazardous materials.
