Driving to work one Friday morning, something simple but powerful came to me.
Traffic… is a lot like life.
At first, it just felt like a passing thought. But the more I sat there, hands on the wheel, watching the cars around me, the more I realised it wasn’t just similar.
It is life.
Because every morning, people set off on the same road. Same general direction. Same intention to get somewhere that matters to them. And just like in life, we all begin at different points, but eventually, our paths cross.
You’ll notice it straight away.
There are those who move fast. The ones who seem in a hurry, weaving in and out, overtaking, pushing ahead. They pass you with confidence, sometimes even impatience, as if slowing down is not an option.
And if you’re honest, in that moment, it can make you question yourself.
“Am I too slow?”
“Should I be doing more?”
“Am I falling behind?”
But then something interesting happens.
A few minutes later… You catch up.
They’re right there again. Stopped at a red light. Waiting. Just like you.
Because no matter how fast you move, there are moments in life that force everyone to pause.
Traffic lights don’t discriminate.
And neither does life.
We all face red lights, unexpected pauses, delays, and moments where progress stops completely. Not because we’ve failed, not because we’re not capable, but simply because it’s not time yet.
And those moments can feel uncomfortable.
You sit there, watching others move in different directions, wondering why your lane is still blocked. Wondering why your progress feels delayed while others seem to glide through.
But what we often don’t see is that every lane has its own set of lights.
Everyone’s journey includes stops.
Everyone’s progress includes waiting.
Then come the junctions and roundabouts.
These are the moments of decision.
Moments where you don’t just move, you choose.
At a roundabout, you can’t just rush in.
You have to slow down. You have to observe. You have to give way. And sometimes, no matter how ready you are, you have to sit and wait because the flow isn’t in your favour.
Car after car passes.
Opportunity after opportunity, it seems.
And it’s easy to feel overlooked in those moments. Easy to feel like life is giving others the right of way while you’re stuck on the sidelines.
But what looks like a delay is often protection.
Because entering at the wrong time could cause chaos.
Timing matters more than urgency.
And when your moment finally comes—when the space opens up, you move.
Not rushed. Not forced. But smoothly, confidently, and safely into the next part of your journey.
That’s how life works, too.
Not every delay is a denial. Sometimes it’s preparation. Sometimes it’s alignment.
Then there are the speed limits.
This part is important.
Because there are times when the road ahead is completely clear. No traffic. No obstacles. Nothing is stopping you from pressing down and going full speed.
And yet… there’s still a limit.
And it can feel frustrating.
“Why should I slow down when I can go faster?”
“Why hold back when everything looks open?”
But limits aren’t always there to restrict you, they’re there to protect you.
In life, moving too fast can cost you things you don’t immediately see. Your peace. Your clarity. Your relationships. Your health.
Discipline is what keeps you steady when everything in you wants to rush ahead.
Because not every open road is an invitation to speed.
Some are a test of your control.
And then, of course, there are the unexpected hold-ups.
Roadworks. Accidents. Diversions.
Things you didn’t plan for.
Things you didn’t cause.
But suddenly, your journey is affected.
You’re delayed. Redirected. Slowed down.
And it’s tempting to get frustrated, to blame, to complain, to ask, “Why me?”
But life doesn’t always give explanations.
Sometimes it just gives situations.
And in those moments, what matters most is not what happened but how you respond to it.
Do you lose patience? Or do you adjust?
Do you give up? Or do you find another way forward?
Because even a diversion still leads somewhere.
And sometimes, it leads you somewhere better than you expected.
Here’s the truth that settled with me as I continued that drive…
Just because someone overtakes you doesn’t mean they’re ahead in life.
Just because you’re stopped doesn’t mean you’re stuck.
Just because your journey feels slower doesn’t mean you’re behind.
We are all navigating different routes, facing different conditions, and dealing with different timings.
Some are accelerating.
Some are waiting.
Some are turning.
Some are rerouting.
But everyone… is moving.
So instead of comparing your journey to the car next to you, focus on your own lane.
Pay attention to your timing.
Respect your pace.
Trust your process.
Because every red light, every roundabout, every speed limit, every delay, it’s not there to stop you.
It’s there to shape how you arrive.
And when you finally reach your destination, it won’t matter how fast you got there.
It will matter that you made it whole, steady, and ready for what comes next
