My biggest small win
Trigger warning for trauma themes.
The most dangerous lie I have ever told myself was this:
"I will always be too much and yet, never enough. The safest version of me is the one that disappears when I am no longer easy to be around."
I turned vanishing into a virtue.
I called it protection. I called it love. Anything, of course, but what it was. In truth, it was my fear dressed up as sacrifice. Every outstretched hand looked like a trap. Like cheese for the mouse. Every act of kindness felt like a contract I could never repay. Like some devils contract. In my mind, needing anything made me a liability. I felt like an emotional and mental drain, to others. If I showed that I struggled, then I was causing worry and stress in others and I would inevitably become "too much."
So I perfected the running. Which is a little ironic, because as a kid, I wanted to be in track. I loved running. But now, its my only defense and the only "protection" I think to offer others.
I donβt argue. I donβt explain. I erased myself quietly and efficiently. I felt like I was doing everyone a favor. I cut people off with cold precision. Heartless and completely misunderstanding that my absence could also hurt. This was my counter-dependency in its purest form. I had a severe fear that if I needed help, those I loved would leave or stop loving me. just because I needed help. It didn't matter what kind. I had to be low maintenance, easy to be around, always well collected. I didn't strive for perfection, but I did strive to look perfect.
If I needed help and someone offered, I felt like the return would be interest plus. Anything I took would of course be multiplied tenfold when it was needed back. Or worse... they'd believe that I was some sort of charity case and eventually let me go for being too much. To prevent that pain, I would simply remove myself first.
But this created a devastating cycle. While I was scaring myself into leaving because "theyβre better off without me," I was also physically and mentally suffering because my emotions were too attached. The separation anxiety would set in, crushing me because I wasnβt with them.
In a dark humor sort of way, I would fully classify this as a form of self-harm, a constant oscillation between the instinct to run and the agony of being alone. Of leaving those I love.
It would have me in a choke-hold and I don't even know what caused this in me. I never had an easy time feeling loved or wanted and being abandoned a lot in life, by friends and family, I think I often turned to blame myself. Maybe it was coincidence that they left after I had a different unrelated issue in my life. Or maybe it was related. I just know I often blamed myself and I think that created that idea... that I needed to have absolute perfection in my life, at least, enough that it seemed that way to others. Because if I could not be completely devoid of issues then I could not be loved.
A few days ago, everything collapsed in my life. I mean anything you could think would go wrong, did. My best friend died before she even got to 24. My other best friend, her twin? Cut everyone out from distress. I lost my job. Any opportunity I had backed out. I got stranded in a country I wanted no more than 2 weeks in. Emergency after emergency drained my bank and my sanity with it.
And this time, I couldnβt hide it. I needed help. Not casually. Not optionally. Desperately. This was life or death. And he was there, offering help without hesitation, without conditions, without fear.
It felt unbearable. Being seen like that made me physically sick. My body was rejecting the idea that I could be both loved and broken at the same time. Every kind word felt like intentional damage. Every moment of support felt like I was ruining something good. My brain was screaming the same command it always does:
"Leave now. Cut him off. Save him from yourself. Save the good memories before its tainted and lost."
The urge to disappear wasnβt miniscule... It burned. It lit up my mind like a searing pain demanding to be noticed. I was seconds away from doing what I always do. It would have been easy. Just block, right? My phone bill would be gone soon too. I didnt see myself making it even, I was already starving to make sure those around me could eat. And I had been put in the hospital for it twice. No chance of going home. Not with the state of the world.
But I loved him too much. Normally, I leave because I care, thinking I am sparing them the burden of me. But the part of me that cared about him refused to shut down. I told him that I would leave. I said goodbye and I saw the pain it caused. And even with my body literally shutting down on me - the physical pain that hit my heart. My lungs, so I couldnt breath, my face cooling only by tears that were choking me at the same time... My feelings didn't go numb, the one time, I relied on them to. They didnβt retreat. My love and active suffering stayed awake the whole time. Somehow, it was stronger than the fear. It was the only thing keeping my head above water. Little use not to drown when you cant breathe anyway. But...
For the first time, I didnβt choose the exit. I stayed.
I stood there, exposed and shaking, and let someone see the worst parts of me without interrupting or apologizing myself to the ends of the earth. I let him help.
And nothing shattered. Nothing went wrong.
He didnβt look at me like I was too much. He didnβt look trapped. He looked at me like I was still worth being there. That realization hit harder than the fear ever did. For the first time, I felt something I didnβt know how to process. Not relief. Not pride. This was something more dangerous. I felt loved in a way, I fear, I could never put to words. I felt supported.
He didn't love me for being "easy", or "self-sufficient", or "low-maintenance". He loved me for being real, messy, and even needing. It felt like something inside me reattached. I wasnβt drifting anymore. I had a place to exist without earning it through silence.
The real shift came in the quiet that followed his help. I said something Iβve never said before. It felt almost violent to admit, and my consciousness screamed that I was a liar...
I told him I would let him help me again. That I understand what I am going through now and I will try to heal this in me.
I meant it, no matter how much my fear denies it.
That moment mattered more than surviving the breakdown. It was a betrayal of everything my fear has trained me to believe. It was a direct challenge to the voice that insists disappearing is the only way to be safe. It wasnβt just a small win. It was sabotage against the version of me that would rather be alone than be seen. It was pivoting to accept not just help but real love.
I still feel the anxiety. It hasnβt softened. If anything, itβs louder now that Iβm not obeying it. But Iβm not letting it decide when I leave anymore. Iβm still complicated emotionally. I'm still sharp in places, even though I don't always want to be. I'm still built out of old defenses that donβt know how to stand down.
But Iβm not a ghost. Iβm here. I'm not needing silence anymore, trying to morph myself into the very absence of sound.
So here is the greatest truth I ever realised.
"I can be broken and loved."
And if being here means being inconvenient, heavy, or imperfect, then so be it. I would rather be a burden than be nothing. For the first time, Iβm choosing to stay and watch what happens when I donβt disappear. My small win was so little, I didn't even notice the win right away. But just accepting help... changed my life and if I am being honest, most likely saved it too.
