Lesson 20: Your Healing Is Not Linear, and That’s Okay
What might your healing look like if you let yourself be patient with your own heart?
I wish someone had told me earlier that healing from emotional trauma doesn’t happen easily. It would’ve saved me from the silent shame I felt on the days when the pain suddenly returned, long after I thought I had outgrown it.
For a long time, I kept asking myself, “Why am I feeling this again?”
I thought setbacks meant I wasn’t strong enough. I thought repeating emotions meant I hadn’t grown. I thought struggling again meant I had failed myself.
But here’s what I’ve learned and want to share with you:
Healing isn’t a straight road. It’s more like trying to follow a map no one ever taught us to read.
Tough, right? I know!
Some days you wake up stronger, lighter, more hopeful.
Other days, a memory comes back and feels as painful as ever.
And in those moments, you might wonder if you’ve made any progress at all.
But you have.
You just don’t see it yet.
Healing Comes in Waves, Just Like Life
Here’s how I think about healing now:
It’s like standing on the shore and watching the ocean move in and out.
Some waves are small, gentle reminders that you’re still learning.
Some are stronger, bringing up emotions from places you didn’t know still hurt.
And some waves can knock you down, leaving you feeling breathless and confused.
But no matter how many times the waves return, you’re still standing.
You’re still moving.
You’re still healing.
It’s not that the waves stop, but that you keep moving forward.
Doesn’t Every Wound Itch Before It Actually Heals?
Think of the last time you had a deep cut.
The bleeding eventually stops.
The wound scabs.
Then, just when you think it’s almost healed, it starts to itch, sometimes even more than before.
That itching isn’t a setback.
It shows that healing is underway beneath the skin's surface, as new skin forms and old layers fall away.
When old feelings itch, when old wounds resurface, or when old memories sting, it doesn’t mean you’ve gone backwards.
It means your heart is slowly mending itself in ways you can’t see yet.
Healing is uncomfortable.
But feeling uncomfortable is a sign you’re making progress, not failing.
You Are Allowed to Feel Everything, Even Again
I had to teach myself this:
You don’t need to be strong every day to heal.
You don’t have to move forward without looking back sometimes.
And you don’t have to “get over it” on anyone else’s schedule, not even your own.
And;
Some days your heart will surprise you.
Some days, your mind will revisit what you thought you released.
Some days, you might feel very sensitive in places you thought had already healed.
And it’s okay.
It’s totally human, understand this.
It’s part of the journey.
Healing isn’t about never being bothered. It’s about becoming more aware.
Healing isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making progress.
Healing isn’t about never feeling pain again. It’s about learning how to support yourself through the pain.

The best thing about healing is this:
Even when you can’t see change, it’s happening.
Even when you feel stuck, something inside is shifting.
Even when you break down, you get back up a little differently each time.
Your journey does not have to make sense to anyone else.
It doesn’t even have to make sense to you yet.
All it has to do is continue.
Healing doesn’t happen in a straight line, but it is still movement.
And movement, even if it’s slow, quiet, or uneven, is still progress.
You’re not behind.
You’re not failing.
You’re not broken.
You’re healing in the most human way there is.
And maybe the real question is:
What might your healing look like if you let yourself be patient with your own heart?
