It's Not 2021. It's 2020+
“It’s not 2021. It’s 2020+.” My friends have heard me say this a lot. They find it amusing, but I’m not really joking. The thing about The New Year is that it’s supposed to have magical powers. We make resolutions and grand plans. We set goals for the future.

A Prisoner Of Your Past
Every single one of us make mistakes in life. Fact! Several times we make decisions in our life which we later regret, and in hindsight, we wish we hadn't have made them at all. Having said that, a lot of these mistakes have led us on a different path in life, and we have perhaps received blessings and rewards we may never have obtained, had it not been for making those wrong decisions in the first place, that is at least if we choose to view it in such a positive frame of mind. Many people fail to view it in such a way however, and they simply cannot let go of these poor or incorrect decisions, and move on with their life. Perhaps there have been decisions that others have made, that we reflect on, which have negatively impacted us, and we cannot let go of, such as a relationship/marital split, or a manager firing us from our job. It's unfortunate that so many of us hold on to these decisions and circumstances, and we either never learn to forgive ourselves, or we never forgive those who hurt us. The images of these moments regularly flash through our mind, as we continually run through different scenarios of how we should have handled the situation or moment better, or what we should have said, written, or done different. If only we had our time over again, hey? Regret may even come off the back of non-decisions, passing up opportunities that could have transformed our life for the better. One of the biggest regrets that people have, when on their death bed, is that they failed to spend more time with the people they love; their family, their children, their parents, their friends, and their partner. Many spend their life too wrapped up and overcommitted to their work and other commitments, that they end up sacrificing such valuable and precious time with their loved ones, when their loved ones should've taken priority. Some people even hold on to the past because they reflect on all the happy memories, all the good times, and all the fun they had, in comparison to their current life, which has become void of such happiness and enjoyment. They become sad and depressed over missing their past.

Finding Your Joy
Each new year brings with it new opportunities as well as facing new challenges. I find it advantageous to spend time reflecting on what changes I want to make from last year and setting intentions on where I want to go over the next twelve months.

New year, still me
The year, 2020, is finally over! It was hard for us all, it was difficult, a lot had changed and we had to find a way to normalize it. But in what we had gone through, we made it to the next year. Hoping that 2021 gives us a better year, hoping that better opportunities come by and positivities come into our lives. Every beginning of New Years' there's a trend that is about challenging ourselves to become a better person. Becoming a better person can mean differently to everyone, some want to stop eating sweets, get in shape, save money, or learn new skills. The one thing about this is that we had a lot of time to challenge ourselves, to learn, to reflect, to become a better person in the year 2020.

Don't Worry Be Happy
The first step in to not worrying and being happy is to have no worries. I know that is easier said than done. It is like someone once told me “Why borrow worry?” I have also heard it said that worry will still your joy. Here are a few ideas of how to keep your worrying in check so it does not steal all your joy: therefor, allowing you to be happy. One suggestion I have is to schedule a certain amount of time for worrying. Let us say 10 min a day. I found this helpful because sometimes worrying can easily become an obsessive behavior for some. Also, you can analyze your worries for validity to determine how likely they are to come true. This can be helpful to determine how much if any time needs to be devoted to worrying. You can also brainstorm possible solutions to your worries. Sometimes there are no solutions, and that is okay, that is when you need to learn to let it go and realize sometimes somethings are beyond our control. When we learn to “let go” it can be a very liberating experience. Vengeance is mine saith the Lord. One of the things I have learned with age is to roll with the flow.

No, thank you.
Say yes. Say yes to catching up with a friends, to new opportunities and endless possibilities. Say yes to meeting people, strange people - circus level people - that stretch your mind and make you see in new colours. A yes to one event, leads you to the another, and suddenly it's 5am and you're watching one man stack hats on-top of another man's head while the latter tells you to wait for the microwave to beep before opening the door. Say yes to uncomfortable and you'll see yourself thrive, and don't forget to say hello as people start to walk over you.

Hey 2021
It's a warm, sunny summers day here in amazing Western Australia. The blistering sun rose into the baby blue sky over the tops of green trees lining the summits of the Darling Range cradling the valleys below from the dry, humid winds of the Gibson Desert. As the cool fanned air whispers over my sheets and fans the drapes apart, the streams of sunlight fill my room and bathe upon my skin, lighting my face to open my eyes. Awakened and grateful to be alive I use my inner core strength to pull my refreshed body from the horizontal position into a sitting grace to reach for my phone sitting on the window sill. Checking my WhattsApp, he hasn't messaged me yet so I send a quick Good Morning x and pull the sheets back. My long legs slide out of the covers and softly land onto the cold vinyl floor. Lifting myself into a stand and walking out my bedroom into the dark hall towards the toilet.

25? Now What?
2018 was the worst year of my life. I started the year off with knee surgery. I then started my practicum student teaching working with a wonderful band director, but my advisor/professor had no faith in my abilities. She ultimately set me up for failure and watched me fail rather than help me. I had just been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and PTSD and put on new medications. My diabetic dog then had a seizure and died in my arms while I was home alone (the rest of my family had been out of town). On my last day of my practicum, I was rear ended at a stoplight and the driver left the scene. I was being taken advantage of at work, because I never say "no".The icing on the cake was my boyfriend of five years "breaking up" with me at my Christmas Party that happened on 12/29. I say "breaking up" with me because it seemed pretty clear to me, but he supposedly was not on the same page and asked to spend New Years Eve with me.
