How Mental Toughness Can Slow Down Your Growth
I yanked open my refrigerator door, anticipating a much-needed wave of cool air to give me relief. It was deep in the summer of 2009 in Boulder, Colorado and I lived in a condo with no air conditioning. What it did have was a weird quirk: when I opened my patio door for a breeze, the smoke detector sometimes blared. I have no clue why. So, before I enjoyed some air from the outside, I had to stand on a chair and yank the detector’s plastic cover off, disabling it.

Chicago
I peel out of the train station’s side exit with about 200 other people and pour into the fast moving stream of commuters on Madison ave as we all cross the bridge over the river. I keep straight for several blocks, keeping the same quick pace and unaverted gaze that only someone who walks the same path each morning could while my music blasts in my earbuds. It’s now 6:50am, and I've been awake since 5:00am. The temptation of using Uber instead of the Red Line pops into my mind, but I'm not a Rockefeller, so I take the same cross street as always past the McDonalds on Randolph and walk underneath some scaffolding that will likely be there for the rest of time. It’s still early, so it's mostly me, the homeless and an occasional few others on each street. I’m making the usual early morning work calls, calling each person on my list until someone picks up and I talk them through the tasks for the day.

My Ugly Garden
I’d rather have an ugly garden than a barren one. To be fair, it’s much easier to have a barren garden. It’s easier to just uproot the weeds than to till the soil, plant the seeds, water every day, and wait for results. There are too many small decisions to make when the garden is barren that it is easier left alone. You can’t make an ugly garden if it’s still bare.

Herein, lies humanity, and all of the abundant entrapments. All of innovation has wrestled with the universe, seeking to find the reasons to these very things we all see.

Consistency, consistency, constancy
Something I have always struggled with is consistency. Building lasting habits and follow-through in my life. Whether it comes to exercise, writing, or self-care, it seems that every time, my self-discipline lasts for a week, a month if I’m lucky, before everything falls of the rails once more and I’m thrown back to square one.
