Brianna's Blues
As Brianna peered into the bathroom mirror, tears began to pour down her cheeks. The bruising around her eye was so pronounced that she had no idea how to cover it for today’s shift at the diner. Just as she was blotting her tears away with a tissue, Ronald bellowed from downstairs “BRIANNA – I’m leaving, make sure you lock up and DON’T BE LATE!” She replied with her usual “Yes, Ronald!” Ronald sped off to open the Diner he owned, where Brianna also worked.

The Magic in the Margins
Sam coughed into the thick smoke, his lungs burning every time he chanced a stifled breath through his old t-shirt. His eyes stung but he opened them as he was leaving the room anyway knowing full well that it wasn’t worth it. All he could see between the noxious clouds engulfing his worldly possessions were the towering flames that he could feel closing in around him. He pressed the shirt to his eyes again and felt his way towards the hallway, knowing that he was going in the right direction but still terrified that he’d never find his way out. Sam’s foot hit something on the floor and he looked down in spite of himself. It was his beloved laptop, shining like gold in the flames. “Everything that I am is in there.” He said and a manic desperation overcame him as he turned away from the exit and towards the inferno.

Three Little Wishes
I sat there on that park bench, empty, lost, hopeless. I thought, how do I navigate this without the person that means the most to me? How could I have lost my job and my marriage in the same week? I put my hand back in my pocket where I had put the court summons and retrieved it. I carefully opened the folded page and looked at the words again, and as I read them, I felt the lump creep back into my throat as a well of tears began to fill my eyes.

It Happens Backwards
“So, tell me, how did you do it?” “Do what, Skye?” “Have you been a part of this conversation, Chris?” The voice was pointed, but riddled with a humor only they could share. He looked around, as if trying to find the other person in the room he must have been talking to this whole time. It was part of their game. What anything became when words left their mouths directed towards one another. He knew Chris had been paying attention; far more than most. To things like the sadness in a waitress’ eyes when her mind was elsewhere, or the momentary hesitation in the breath of someone on the verge of saying something before they chose not to.

More Time
More Time “So here I go today. Same as always. Hey guys. My name’s Syreen and I am going to be rich and comfortable one day. I absolutely know that I am. When I was born, there was nothing but positivity and blessings in this world for me. I have always had a pretty good life until I graduated. After graduation, I just could never really figure out what I wanted to do in life. You know, could not figure out my calling. I have no idea what I was put here to do. I have had so many jobs and career changes. My life is so stale and troublesome. My mind always, oh wait. Where is my black journal? Give me a moment guys. I must find my journal. Journaling helps me. I’ve been doing it for about a year now.”

The Big Swerve
The Big Swerve By Megan Shay Henry James Neilson IV, who did not think of himself as such except when he encountered major life events like his recent graduation from Yale, pulled a legal pad from his new desk in his new office and contemplated what he might do with it until 11:50am when the Senior Partners were taking him to Oakley Country Club for his welcome lunch. He was tapping his monogrammed Mont Blanc on the pad when the telephone rang. It was Sylvia, his father’s secretary for the last twenty-five years, now his. AJ, as Henry thought of himself, found having a secretary to be baffling since anything his father said she would do for him was something he could easily do himself. He also found himself pondering Sylvia’s move to his corner of the top floor and the slick, svelte thirty-something “assistant” who now resided outside his father’s door.

The Gift
It was a Wednesday afternoon, not that I carried a hone or calendar to know this, it was chili day – or at least a warm soup reddened with tomato and meat that resembled what I remember as chili. I knew because I stood in a line which nearly circled the building. I watched as the boy in front of me squeezed his eyes closed, as another gust of wind ran across his face. His beading eyes now facing mine to avoid the northwest winds, drawing my otherwise remiss attention. So much went unnoticed in those days.
