“We are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with”, said Motivational Speaker Jim Rohn.

You might have heard, “Surround yourself with like-minded people, it's really important”.

Austin Kleon also says in his book Steal Like An Artist, “Stands next to the talent”.

Stand Next to Talent

If you always get a chance to surround yourself with great people then that's great, go ahead, you are sorted.

However, it is practically impossible to achieve.

Let me tell you, Why?

Most of the time you never get to choose people in your surrounding.

Let me give you some examples:

1. You don't get to choose the people around you where you spend a significant amount of the time i.e your office. You might be in an office where no one is as goal-oriented as you.

2. A big amount of your time passes by traveling by train or by bus, you don't get a chance to choose people around you at that time.

3. You might be at school or college where you do not get a chance to sit beside kids who always think about how to use time productively or what is the best use of their free time. Rather they might not even bother about their time.

4. You might be a housewife and most of the time goes to household work and with kids, you don't even get a chance to socialize with like-minded people.

Situations are endless in which you might not be lucky enough to choose the people around you.

Yes, of course, once in a while you get the chance to choose great people to socialize with.

However, as I said it's once in a while, or you might be in telephone contact with such great people.

But in the surrounding, you get different kinds of people in your day-to-day life and you have to deal with them and accept the situation.

However, Jim Rohn’s quote still stands true i.e. “We are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with”

Now, the question is, with these odds in our life, how can you still surround yourself with like-minded people?

We still can surround ourselves with like-minded people, with:

1. Books, that we read

Correct books are a great source of knowledge. Books have magic to give you company even when you are not reading it. Thoughts from the books keep coming to you when you are not reading it, hence can be proved as a great thing to surround yourself with.

2. Videos, we watch

Content that we consume through video keeps on running in our minds and has a great impact on us and influences us to a great extent.

3. Audio, we listen to (through a good podcast)

This is great when we travel, drive a car, or do any other household work.

4. People we follow online.

People who we follow online have a great influence on us. So better we follow the correct people.

5. Avoid longer conversations with people who drain your energy

This is something that you must start doing right away. The longer we are in a such company more they drain us.

6. Spending quiet time with our own selves, and reflecting on our life

This helps us understand our own self, and reflect on our own mistakes, and future paths.

Hope this is helpful, and be mindful of your surroundings.
