SONJ (Special Olympics New Jersey) does incredible work with many individuals and organizations in NJ who have developmental disabilities and beyond. Based out of Lawrenceville, they serve and support the greater Mercer County area as well as the rest of the Garden State through their work in the human services field. Speaking of which, isn't every human being in need of services in some way, shape, or form? I've utilized doctor's care for physical well-being as well as therapists for mental well-being. I'm sure most of us have at least used doctor's care for physical well-being at some point in our lives, so technically, we fall into the category of human services as well.

Bottom line is that we don't need to have an IEP to benefit from receiving care. Care can be given in many ways--a friend listening to you share your story or just checking up on the past several months or years you haven't seen each other, an annual check-up at your primary care physician to make sure all is good physically, giving someone a hug that needs it, seeing a therapist to dig deeper into what's been going on in your life and impacting your mental state in a less than ideal way, etc...etc...etc...Whatever the case may be, it's ongoing care for you to best serve you as a whole...not just one part here and one part there. This is an important distinction to make when we talk about serving humans. Yes, we are made up of many body parts, but all of them work with one another to make up the whole of our selves. If one part is not working the way it should, it has the ability to negatively impact other parts. Conversely, if all the parts are working as they should, it will positively impact our entire self. All of these parts make up us as a whole, and in order for the whole to be in good working condition, we need to pay attention to every part...both physically and mentally alike. Why am I bringing this up and so adamant about it? Because I can't think of anything else more important in life than self-care. Self-care is not only great for us inside, but great for the entire world. When we take care of ourselves, we are showing love to ourselves. And, when we show love to ourselves, we will bring that love out into the world with everything we do and everyone we meet. The Beatles said it best, 'All You Need is Love'. Isn't that so true? It's not being selfish either, because I've heard that one in the past, too. To me, it's simple--in order to take care of others in the best ways possible, we have to take care of ourselves first. This is being self-less, not self-ish. In the end, it's a domino effect which can only result in positive consequences.

So, in an effort to raise more awareness about self-care, love, and give back to an awesome organization at the same time, I've created a GoFundMe campaign to support SONJ (Special Olympics of New Jersey), especially during this time of Polar Bear Plunges across the state. Consider donating to their cause by checking out the videos below, which features an original song inspired by some of the individuals my company, Key of Awesome Music, serves and supports called, 'Just Like You and Me' along with the donation link and more information about the song/book that goes along with it.
