Don't Just Sit There

“If you have a dream, don’t just sit there. Gather courage to believe that you can succeed and leave no stone unturned to make it a reality.” - Dr Roopleen

Why is it that so many people have this foolish belief, that one day, their goals will come to them? It's like people believe that life will just hand them success, happiness, and their goals, their circumstances will turn around for the better, and they will live happily ever after. I'd like to say that I'm joking around in making such a statement, but sadly, it's the truth. The only action that most people seem to take, in pursuing their goals, is trotting on down to the local lotteries agent to buy a lottery ticket, with the expectation that a piece of paper with a few numbers on it, offering the odds of 1 in 7 million to win $1 million, will deliver them everything they ever wanted. To put these odds into perspective, you are 7 times more likely to be struck by lightning than winning division 1 in the lottery. Granted that there is always someone who is rewarded out of pure luck, but for most people, it's nothing more than week after week of having their hopes shattered. It's staggering to think that more than 1 in every 3 people are relying on a lottery win to fund their retirement. Now that's disturbing! Why do so many of us place our hopes of achieving wealth, success, and our goals, on a few ping pong balls with numbers drawn on them? One word; laziness.

We know the genuine road to wealth, success, and our goals, requires years of hard work, dedication, commitment, patience, and even many failures. For most of us though, we don't have that motivation, drive, courage, or will power, to get off our backside, and actually apply ourselves to achieving our goals. It's all too hard. It takes too much energy. It takes too long. In feeling this way, we resort back to finding any outlet that can potentially provide us with money quickly, and something we don't have to exert energy for. It's why so many people get themselves scammed, off the back of trying to invest in something that offers to generate them fast, and so called, guaranteed rewards. They're blinded by the dollars, and enticed by the fact they don't need to do much. It's time to face the harsh truth, success and goals accomplishment takes years of hard work, sacrifice, failures, patience, hardships, commitment, determination, resilience, and dedication. Success doesn't come from winning the lottery, that's mere luck. There's no true achievement in winning the lottery. It's like being presented with a gold medal at the Olympics, even though you didn't compete. Money is not what generates true satisfaction and fulfillment, it's having worked hard, having maintained the belief in oneself, and having had the strength, perseverance, and courage, to have overcome so much adversity and hardship, to reach a personal goal. That is genuine success.

It begs a couple of questions that people really need to ask themselves. How much do you truly want success? How much do you really want to achieve your goals and prosperity in life? In fact, you actually need not even have to answer those questions, because the answer can be found in your actions. If you're investing your money in the hope of a lottery win, then it signals that you're goals aren't genuinely driving you, that you lack will power, you lack patience, you lack courage, and you are lazy. Those who achieve success in life, are those who work hard for it. So what is it that is truly holding us back from working hard? One would think that achieving our goals, and generating success, happiness, satisfaction, and prosperity, in life, would be well and truly valid reasons to want to work hard. The first element to look at here, is the goal itself. What is that one goal we truly want to achieve? What is that one goal that creates a fire in our belly, and spurs our emotions on internally? What is that one goal that we would be so proud to achieve, and one in which that would bring us great satisfaction? If it's to become wealthy, and live a life of luxury, then you've just highlighted exactly where you're going wrong in life. We should never place money as the centerpiece of our goals, because if we have the mindset to be chasing money, then that's all we will ever find ourselves doing, chasing money. That's just how life seems to work. Our goals should be about our family, about personally achieving something we are passionate about for ourselves, or about helping others. It's basically something that you would do anything for, in order to achieve it, something that you wouldn't just give up pursuing because things get tough. Your goal needs to motivate you, inspire you, and drive you, otherwise it's only natural you wouldn't really care about achieving it.

The second element links in with the first one, around the importance of having a goal that genuinely drives us. It's having will power. When something genuinely drives, motivates, and inspires us, we tend to find that will power and urge to take action. It's a priority to us, and with such a desire and hunger to achieve that goal, nothing denies us from doing the actions we need to do to create that success. Take a look at a professional athlete, such as a swimmer. Do you think they want to get out of their nice warm bed at 4am each morning, just to do some laps at the local swimming center? Just to compete in the Olympics would mean four years of doing this routine, at least for the majority of those days, which is a damn long time. There'd be days where they would be feeling flat, they would be feeling tired, they would fail to achieve a personal best time, they would wonder if it's all worth it, they would doubt their abilities, and undoubtedly, be wishing they were still in bed sleeping. Even with all this, they persevere, because they remain determined to achieve an Olympic medal, they remain focused on even just representing their country on the biggest stage. Their goal is something that internally drives them, they yearn for that personal accomplishment, and the will power they possess in trying to achieve that goal, is solid. Achieving our own goals, we should have exactly the same attitude and mindset. It's understanding that we need to just keep trialing actions, changing those actions when they fail, remaining focused on what we want to achieve, and resisting the enticement of other activities that aren't working towards our goals.

In pursuing our goals, like the ongoing training of a professional swimmer, we too have to complete actions that are a little mundane, boring, and strenuous. With this in mind, it's not hard to be enticed by other activities that require less energy, whilst offering more fun and enjoyment. Be it watching television, lying on the couch, sleeping in, hanging out with friends, browsing through social media, and other similar activities, they are undoubtedly a more attractive option. That's where will power comes in. We need to resist dedicating so much time to the activities that aren't working towards our goals. These activities may deliver us a short burst of satisfaction and enjoyment, but they can't provide us with long term satisfaction, success, happiness, and prosperity. That's where we need to ask ourselves, what's more important, bursts of satisfaction that lead to no reward, or lifelong happiness and success? Never lose focus on that goal! It needs to drive you so hard, that you are strong enough to resist the temptation of laziness and ease. If you have a dream you desire, a goal that you desperately want to achieve, then don't just sit there! You need to make it happen, not sit around hoping that it will magically come to you. You need to work hard, meet adversity head on, overcome failures, and resist the temptation to take it easy or quit. Stop trying to take the easy way out, and start proving yourself and your character! Success is waiting for you, but only if you're willing to work for it! Find that will power within you today, and keep it alive!
