The Art of Writing

I loved writing from an early age; however, I never thought I would become one until I fell into the industry by accident. No I wouldn't say accident, I was unemployed student at the time, and I thought I could make some money doing what I loved. I started to write online until I gradually convinced myself I was a freelance writer, even though I couldn't justify my new job to myself. While the pay is by no means fair, the old adage of some money is better than none is all too true.

Writing is something which grows on you and it never goes away, even when you are writing professional texts such as articles, resumes, cover letters and personal statements. These and other arguably dry, boring, texts are important, yet they do not stimulate the mind. They do not satisfy the readers or the writer's soul. Novels, short stories, poetry and other creative texts satisfy the soul as they provide them with language, as well as stories. In an age where people are expected to embrace modern technology, E-books have become all the rage.

I personally prefer physical books as they are easier to read and they are more authentic than their digital competitors. I love the smell of physical books and the feel of the pages as I turn them with my fingers until I am forced to stop. Writers often say they want their readers to follow them on their journey as they create characters everyone can relate to. As an aspiring author, I know what they mean. It is a pleasure to produce stories for entertainment and other purposes in an age where they are needed more than ever.

Humans told stories to their children to teach them about the world and to encourage them to use their imagination. I don't think I'd be the person I am today if I didn't use my imagination for the purpose of encouraging my audience to use theirs. Writing and books are my life as they are for established authors around the world.

Books reflect the cultural values and beliefs which are dear to their writer's heart. The idea of class, race, gender, institutions and their function stem from the era they grew up in as well as their sociological imagination. Writers are social commentators as their work reflects the attitudes and norms of the day. Novels arguably provide an even greater window to humanity, than non-fiction texts because the challenge the status quo with the intention of achieving lasting social change. Writers are often influenced by what they read, and many famous authors claim classic literary, and other novels helped them to reflect on their world, often with the desire of creating, a just, more equitable society.

Covers encourage readers to delve into the pages inside as well as the worlds they contain. The old, and somewhat tired cliche, that fine wine gets better with age is true for books as it is for a rich read or what beverage. Well crafted covers, are as special as the pages and their text because they speak of people who love them. As a freelance writer, it is impossible not to respect and revere the works of others as well as the discolouration of the, often thin, white, paper as they speak to my soul.

Readers appreciate the work of others yet they do not always realise, the ideal reader is an active participant in story process. Book worms, often become writers, yet some people cannot understand they too write the narrative, because readers are also writers. We are storytellers and the tales we tell are memorable because we captivate our audience as few people can. We are performers on paper, as our words are our stock-in-trade, and we use them to entertain, educate, persuade and provide audiences with a desire for everlasting social change. I could not imagine a world without the mighty pen as it has served me well and it is they only thing I could ever see myself doing. A world without books is unthinkable, yet I appreciate oral stories because they also capture the imagination as few things can.
