What would you do if a study came out that revealed the average office worker only spends 45% of their time during working hours being productive? Maybe you would laugh, maybe you will think it is ridiculous, or maybe your first thought will be "not me." Unfortunately or fortunately for most people, they are spending more than half their time not getting anything done.

The typical American spends about 240 minutes a day, or five hours and 24 minutes surfing the web for non-work related websites. This equates to roughly 30% of an office worker's total time during work hours being spent on non-work related websites.

Every day, six hours of your work time is wasted surfing the social media sites you have bookmarked in your web browser's favorites section. That does not include all of the idle browsing time that occurs while taking a break from working.

Even when you think you are working, studies show that nine percent of our day is spent on non-work related tasks we have in mind.

The good news is that there are activities to keep your free time being productive so you can increase the percentage of work hours where you are getting things done. The bad news is it will take some effort in order to get your productivity in the office back on track.

Here are some tips for increasing your productivity when you are in the office:

1. Say no when people ask you to do extra work .

2. Send emails only during certain time intervals . Make sure they are quick, short communications instead of long, drawn out replies where you give your two cents on everything.

3. Close all of your non-essential tabs and programs when you are at work.

4. Make a priority list of the tasks you need to get done for each hour of work time . Pay attention to what is more important than others and knock those out first whenever possible.

5. Shut off your computer for an hour of every day to spend time with friends and family.

6. Dress for success . Maintain a professional appearance at all times, even if you are working from home. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident in order to avoid distractions throughout the day.

7. Close out your email inbox at least once a day. Go through and delete messages, unsubscribe from messages you do not want to receive anymore and try to reply back to messages that require a response within 24 hours or less.

8 . Use ambient noise instead of music as your soundtrack for getting things done. Music can be distracting at times, especially if it is something catchy that you know the lyrics to.

9. Relax and make a cup of tea or coffee in order to get a short break from work .

These are ways to get started on increasing your productivity when you are in the office. It takes some time to get used to this way of working, but it will become second nature eventually.

If you desire to work more efficiently at home, then take the necessary steps to ensure that is possible. The number one thing that can help increase productivity while working from home is being organized . Make sure you have the tools and programs that will help keep everything as organized as possible.

That way, you can work more efficiently from home, just as if you were working from an office location.

There are a lot of opportunities to increase your productivity at work each day . Just remember what you have read here next time there is a task that needs to be completed and you will have no problem finding ways to get the job done more efficiently.
