If you keep telling yourself that you don't want to do anything, discover the causes of this lack of motivation and this apathy, its symptoms and how to stop procrastinating.

Demotivation is a state that almost all of us have experienced at one time or another. When we are demotivated, it is as if our strength has left us and many activities that encouraged us lose their appeal. This feeling is often accompanied by apathy and sadness, we lose the breath that kept us going.

What is lack of motivation?

Lack of motivation is a loss of energy or drive that comes from within. "I don't feel like doing anything" is a phrase you say often and is accompanied by passive behavior.

It's okay sometimes to have no motivation, but not for long. Depending on its severity, professionals differentiate between lack of enthusiasm and a state of apathy.

What is apathy?

Apathy is a decrease or loss of motivation in aspects such as goal orientation, cognitive activity and emotional expression. To have apathy is to have difficulty mobilizing to do activities. It is not caused by a physical cause despite feeling tired, but it is caused by emotional fatigue or loss of emotional interest.

People who suffer from apathy are indifferent to desires and emotions, and feel like doing nothing. They feel very tired so with no interest in moving, a lack that can affect their life such as difficulties at work, difficulties in maintaining an activity...

You should know that apathy is a symptom and not a cause of lack of motivation.

Symptoms of Lack of Motivation

Here are some of the most obvious signs of our demotivation:

  1. Fear: Fear is a very limiting emotion that paralyzes us and prevents us from moving forward. When we are afraid, even if only part of us experiences it, demotivation and loss of enthusiasm can act as a defense mechanism that tries to keep us "safe".
  2. Loss of interest: to cover basic needs, such as eating or going to the toilet.
  3. Having negative thoughts about your environment and yourself. When we have no motivation, we underestimate our abilities.
  4. Mood swings and being irritable: Apathy sets in from signs of despair and diminished frustration tolerance.
  5. A change in sleeping habits: you start to suffer from insomnia and you are unable to get enough rest.
  6. Chronic boredom: When you are bored at work, performing mechanical tasks, living an unmotivated life, you may feel like nothing is motivating you.
  7. Apathy: mentioned previously, it is when the person has no passion, no longer feels sensations or emotions.
  8. There are several ailments that reinforce this lack of motivation: depression, burnout, schizophrenia, eating disorders are some psychological causes.

How to heal from a lack of motivation?

There are certain methods that allow us to be more motivated to achieve each of our goals. Although these are examples of motivation that can be useful to each of us, in many cases each person will have to know themselves better to know how to motivate themselves.

  • Create moments of happiness. You need to choose activities that help motivate you. These moments don't have to be complicated or special and even cheap.
  • Walks. Walks in the open air or in natural spaces strengthen the immune system and the metabolism, they are beneficial to health and the sun stimulates the production of vitamin D and releases happiness hormones.
  • Identify and eliminate distractions. The laptop, movies, series or the couch can be distractions that make us feel unproductive and lead to a loss of motivation.
  • Have a quality sleep routine. Insomnia problems are linked to lack of motivation and fatigue. It is important to get quality sleep.
  • Get out of the comfort zone. How can we overcome our lack of motivation if we perform the same routine every day? We get up in the morning, we work, we come home, and to end the day we fall asleep. The good idea is to take on new challenges and get out of our comfort zone. Getting out of the comfort zone is a "boost" of self-confidence.
  • Coaching. Coaching is an ideal tool for finding motivation in any field, because through this process you can become fully aware of your current situation and set new goals to help motivate you. A coach will help you look within to find out what you really want and help you achieve those goals.
