1. Mindfulness Meditation

Meditation is an ancient practice that has been found to be useful for everything from managing high blood pressure to coping with the symptoms of psoriasis. It also may be helpful in improving concentration, memory, and focus.

The meditation practice known as mindfulness is very simple. You sit still with your eyes closed, and simply pay attention to what you're experiencing in the present moment. This includes physical sensations (such as breathing), sounds around you, thoughts that come into your mind, etc. The idea is not to judge any of these things, but just simply to observe them.

2. Make it a Habit

The more you practice focusing your mind, the better you'll become at it. For this reason, try making meditation or some other form of exercise that requires focus part of your daily routine. This way, you give yourself many opportunities each day to strengthen and reinforce your ability to concentrate.

3. Keep Things Interesting

No matter how much you practice, it's impossible to maintain focus indefinitely without any distractions. Try to constantly change the activity that requires your focus so that you don't get bored and lose interest. For example, if you're practicing meditation, try doing some yoga every now and then, or perhaps work on some graphic design projects. Keeping things varied will help to maintain your focus and concentration over the long-term.

4. Take Frequent Breaks

The fact of the matter is, our minds are not built to focus on one thing for very long. Even if you're practicing something that requires a high degree of attention (such as the aforementioned yoga or design work), it's still too much to ask your brain to stay focused for hours on end.

As a result, you need to take frequent breaks throughout the day in order to give your mind some time to relax. You can do something as simple as walking around the block every hour or so. Alternatively, you could drink some tea, take a nap, etc. Just try to avoid doing these things while you're engaged in the activity that requires your attention, because this can become somewhat counter-productive (e.g., taking a drink of water while practicing meditation).

5. Listen to Music

According to researchers at Mindlab International , listening to certain types of music can actually enhance your ability to concentrate, focus, and perform tasks requiring attention. What the researchers found was that when participants listened to tracks in the genres of blues or classical music while performing these tasks, they scored higher than when listening to nothing at all.

6. Get Enough Sleep

If you're not getting enough sleep each night, you aren't giving your brain the downtime it needs to maintain optimum performance. Some studies have shown that people who are sleep-deprived (defined as getting less than 7 hours of sleep per night) lose their ability to focus and concentrate after only a few days.

Improving focus and concentration is not easy work. According to the experts, it requires constant repetition, dedication, and willpower. However, like any other skill your brain learns (such as riding a bike or playing an instrument), it is possible with time and effort to improve your abilities in this area. As long as you're willing to put the work into it, you'll find that even just a little bit of improvement can lead to big gains over time.
