A marriage is a journey, with many turns, twists, and unanticipated detours along the way. Like any journey, this one is not without its difficulties, but it also offers the promise of love, friendship, and limitless opportunities. Having travelled this path for years, I have picked up insightful insights along the road that have made my marriage a vibrant union full of laughter, joy, and steadfast love.

My journey started with a simple "I do"—a vow made in front of loved ones on a bright day. As we said our vows and planted a kiss to formally promise to each other, the world appeared to stop still. We had no idea that the intricacies of marriage—the highs and lows and everything in between—lies beneath the surface of our seemingly unwavering happiness.

During a really trying time in our relationship, I had one of the most moving real-life events that has influenced my viewpoint on marriage. The responsibilities of work, family, and daily life began to pull us apart. We no longer felt as connected as we once did; instead, we felt disconnected and unsatisfied.

We made a crucial choice at this turbulent time to put our marriage first above all else. We set out on a voyage of self-discovery, making time for deep dialogue, common experiences, and sincere bonding. Together, we shared laughs and tears as we walked through the challenging times in our relationship with open minds and hearts.

We gained important insight from this experience: marriage calls very deliberate work and unshakable dedication. We need to actively tend to our relationship, treating it like a delicate flower that requires care and attention. It is not enough to just live together.

We learned numerous important lessons along the way that have become the cornerstone of our marriage as we set out on this path of renewal:

1. It's All About Communication: Effective communication between partners is essential for every marriage to succeed. We now know how to communicate our ideas and feelings honestly, listen with empathy, and approach disagreement with a willingness to understand and make concessions.

2. Put Quality Time First: It's simple to overlook spending quality time with our relationships in the rush of daily life. We've made it a point to set out time specifically for one another, whether it's a weekend getaway, a weekly date night, or just spending a calm evening at home.

3. Embrace Growth and Change: Marriage is a journey of growth and evolution, both as individuals and as a couple. We've learned to embrace change with open arms, recognizing that our relationship will ebb and flow like the tides of the ocean. By embracing growth and change, we've fostered a sense of resilience and adaptability in our marriage.

4. Celebrate Each Other's Differences: We are two unique individuals with our own quirks, flaws, and strengths. Instead of trying to change each other, we celebrate our differences, recognizing that they enrich our relationship and make us stronger together.

5. Never Stop Laughing: Our marriage is held together by laughter. We now know how to laugh at ourselves, see the funny side of things, and enjoy the happiness that comes from sharing a good chuckle. Laughter has been our light in the darkest of moments, getting us through the most difficult situations.

We've grown a marriage that is as colourful and lovely as a springtime blooming garden thanks to these values and a tonne of others. This marriage is a tribute to the strength of dedication, communication, and steadfast love. It is full of love, laughter, and endless possibilities.

A remark by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry comes to mind as I think back on my voyage through the wonderful landscape of marriage: "Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction." Ultimately, marriage is about the trip we take together, hand in hand, hearts entwined, as we experience life's highs and lows as a couple, not just the destination.
