Your wedding is one of the most exciting days of your life, but it can also be one of the most expensive. Even the best budgeters often find it hard to keep their costs down so they can still have enough money left over to pay for their honeymoon. Luckily, there are a few simple ways you can cut costs without forcing you to cut corners on the happiest day of your life. Here are a few proven tips to help you stay under budget on your wedding day.

1. Do Your Own Makeup

The right makeup can make or break the way you look on your wedding day. Though you can always hire a professional makeup artist to get you ready, doing so will likely cost you hundreds of dollars. Instead, consider handling your own hair and makeup. Your bridesmaids will be able to help you make sure it looks as good as you dream it should. It’s also a good idea to take a few classes before your big day so you can feel like you know exactly what you’re doing. Get tips and tutorials from your local makeup supply store and enroll in an eyelash extension course and learn from established experts.

2. Choose the Right Day of the Week

Weddings won’t cost the same even when they’re held at the same venue. This is because venues charge based on demand and some days are going to be busier than others. If possible, get quotes from your preferred venues for several days of the week. Typically, you’ll end up paying less if you get married during the week and leave the weekend open for someone who wants to pay a premium. If they’re still too expensive, consider choosing a venue that’s a little less traditional. Parks, museums and even college campuses offer beautiful scenery and ambiance at a much cheaper price.

3. Pick Your Own Vendors

When you’re looking for venues, you’ll likely come across many that have preferred or even required vendors. These venues won’t let you use their space unless you agree to partner with their vendors. Be choosey. Look for a place that allows you to choose your own vendors and shop around. Get estimates from several catering companies and party equipment rental services before you make your decision. This way, you’ll be able to compare prices and services so you can choose the one that makes the best sense for your budget.

4. Skip the Cake Entirely

A wedding cake may be the most traditional way to celebrate your union, but it’s not the only option you have. Think about what you and your fiancé actually enjoy eating and use this to guide your choice. For example, if you both prefer pie to cake, skip the cake and pick up a few pies from your favorite bakery. If you’d rather handle the preparations yourself, consider baking several dozen of your favorite cookies or cupcakes for your guests to enjoy. They’ll be much cheaper than a highly decorated wedding cake and will make your wedding stand out in your guests’ minds for years to come.

5. Keep Your Bar Limited

For most couples, one of the most expensive parts of the reception is the alcohol they serve. Open bars are convenient, but they can cost you thousands of dollars depending on the size of your wedding and the types of alcohol you serve. Instead of offering your guests everything under the sun, keep your alcohol selection limited. Choose a few of your favorites and let bartenders serve those options alone. You can save even more money by ditching the alcohol entirely or letting your guests pay for their own drinks with a cash bar. Remember, your guests are there to celebrate you and your new spouse. They don’t need to have their preferred (and overpriced) cocktail to do it.

Your wedding can still be the best party you’ve ever thrown without breaking the bank. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll save hundreds of dollars from the very beginning.
