Greetings Dear Reader,

Happy new year, to you and yours on this beautiful Easter Sunday of 2019. By ‘new year’ I mean nature’s new year or simply put—spring season. It is therefore in honor of this new year that I am writing this blog, with a focus on one of our greatest assets of true-wealth, and that is our own health and well being.

Have you ever heard the saying that your health is your wealth?

In sharing my experience, when I hear any mention of ‘health and wellness,’ it usually involves a focus on the following topics:

  • Diet/dietary supplements
  • Nutrition
  • Medicine
  • Pathology
  • Etc

For me, health & wellness includes all of the above, in addition to just one more element that, in my humble opinion, is very crucial to them all. This element also forms the basis to successfully sustaining one’s own homeostasis in general.

Well, which element would that be Jerovon, you may be asking?

Traditionally, depending on one’s cultural perspective, here in modern-day western culture, it is said that there are four elements: fire, earth, air, and water.

According to older, eastern-traditional cultures, it is actually five-elements. Here’s a question for thought…

What if the fifth-element that is most crucial to one’s own health, is actually one’s own mind?

By mind, I mean the subconscious mind, of course.

Being a spiritual person at heart who is a huge supporter and promoter of whole-health & wellness, all phenomenon, concepts, and philosophies in life can and should have some qualified-scientific support that is easily verifiable by the inquisitive mind of the independent scholar. For this reason, I feel it necessary to include in this article, the shared and documented opinions of healthcare and psychological-professionals who have contributed immensely to our knowledge of the influence of the mind on one’s health & wellness throughout the years.

Let’s take a moment to explore some of these opinions:

  • "The adapting organism must have the freedom of motion, the mobility to change. Therefore, to me, health becomes synonymous with motion. Similarly, disease is stasis. The ability to adapt requires that freedom of motion. By motion, I mean motion way down on the ionic, atomic, molecular, and cellular levels… All of the movement must be effective and in response to the grand commands from whatever commanders govern that body as well as its psyche. By “psyche,” I mean all aspects of the mind, the emotions, and the soul or spirit.” ( John E. Upledger, DO, OMM—preface of Planet Medicine by Richard Grossinger.)
  • "All the works of man have their origin in creative fantasy. What right have we then to depreciate imagination." (Carl Jung.)
  • “Healing at its fundamental level might well be a rebalancing of constituent parts of the whole organism, and a reconciliation with the appropriate superordinate pattern—with Self, world, Tao, God or whatever we choose to call it.” (Edward Whitmont, MD, homeopath.)
  • “The key is to remember that how our minds feel as we go about our day—how relaxed, happy, and fulfilled we are—gets translated into the physiology of the body.” (Lissa Rankin, MD—Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself.)

Mentalism

So what exactly is mentalism?

Here are a few textbook definitions:

  • Definition: the doctrine that all objects exist only when perceived by some mind.
  • In philosophy of mind, mentalism is the view that the mind and mental states exist as causally efficacious inner states of persons. The view should be distinguished from substance dualism, which is the view that the mind and the body are two distinct kinds of things which nevertheless interact with one another
  • In psychology, mentalism refers to those branches of study that concentrate on perception and thought processes: for example, mental imagery, consciousness, and cognition, as in cognitive-psychology.

MY definition: my reality reflecting my own subconscious mind.

Let’s now discuss the famous placebo effect…

Placebo Effect

I remember back in the mid-to-late 90’s hearing about these experiments conducted by doctors (that I later discovered was called the placebo effect), where they administered sugar pills to their patients to cure their headaches, unbeknownst to the patients of course. The end result was that the headaches were gone, no thanks to the sugar pills, but instead to the power of their own subconscious beliefs in the sugar-pills to cure their headaches. What was the end result? They cured themselves of their headaches without realizing it.

For me, this only validates the awesome potential of the subconscious to do amazing things, when properly programmed (via meditation, positive affirmations, etc).

So what is the placebo effect? How does it work exactly?

Here are a few facts to consider:

Definition…

Pla•ce•bo ef•fect/pləˈsēbō əˈfekt,ēˈfekt/Noun.Noun: placebo effect; plural noun: placebo effects.A beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must, therefore, be due to the patient's belief in that treatment.

Commentary…

'The placebo effect is more than positive thinking — believing a treatment or procedure will work. It's about creating a stronger connection between the brain and body and how they work together," says Professor Ted Kaptchuk of Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, whose research focuses on the placebo effect.

One of the most studied and strongest placebo effects is in the reduction of pain. According to some estimates, approximately 30 to 60 percent of people will feel that their pain has diminished after taking a placebo pill.’

Meditation and Healing

Can meditation cure anything?

Let’s let the professionals speak for themselves.

"It is impossible to deny that in western culture, our dependence on medical science to deal with our health issues is strong. But in other cultures, particularly older cultures in the east, the benefits of meditation as a natural cure for many ailments is well known. It makes sense, then, that we in the west begin to understand the phenomenal natural cures meditation offers… The first natural cure benefit that meditation can provide is by allowing your mind to calm and look away from your medical problem, the stress and worry aspect of illness is reduced. Stress and worry are notorious for lowering the body’s ability to fight off illness. By taking anxiety out of the picture, a natural cure is provided to the body. The reason meditation heals lies in the breath. During meditation, deep breathing is essential. The increased oxygen to the bloodstream from meditative deep breathing speeds healing to the lungs, the stomach and the vital organs. As the patient goes through his or her meditation session, the constant breathing slows the heart and the metabolism. Often palpitations and anxiety related symptoms disappear immediately. The relaxed physical state of the patient then serves as a natural cure to allow the body to begin to recover and to grow more healthy." (141 Benefits of Meditation)
"Can the power of the mind help humans self-heal? That’s what a group of scientists are hoping to help determine by studying a Tibetan lama who believes he cured himself of gangrene through meditation. When Tibetan Lama Phakyab Rinpoche immigrated to the United States in 2003, he was a 37-year-old refugee with diabetes and Pott’s Disease. His afflictions had gotten so bad that his right foot and leg had developed gangrene. He was hospitalized and examined by three different doctors in New York City who all gave the same treatment recommendation: amputate. A deeply spiritual man who has devoted his life to the teachings of Buddhism, it was only natural that he should reach out to his mentor, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, when deciding whether to allow his leg to be cut off. The Dalai Lama’s response was shocking: Do not amputate. Instead, Lama Rinpoche says, the Tibetan spiritual leader advised his protégé to utilize his virtuoso skills at Tsa Lung meditation— heal himself, and then teach others the value of the ancient tradition. And so he began to meditate. Rinpoche says he took no medicine and his diet was an ordinary one… The progression of the degradation wasn’t simply halted—his leg was back from the dead. Then, after nine months, he says something began to happen that many Americans would consider a miracle. The liquid leaking from his disabled leg began to run clear. The swelling went down. Soon he could put some weight on it. At ten months, he could walk again, first with crutches.""…Dr. Bushell and NYU neuroscientist Zoran Josipovic, Ph.D. won Lama Rinpoche’s cooperation in undergoing a functional MRI scan of his brain while he meditated inside the scanner at NYU’s Center for Brain Imaging…Bushell wrote a scientific analysis of the processes occurring in the same form of meditation used by Rinpoche in a letter to Joshua Lederberg, Nobel Prize winner in medicine, some 10 years ago… It speaks of the mild to moderate hyperthermia resulting from the practice, which kills bacteria and aids the body in healing." (Can Meditation Cure Disease?)

A five-year study conducted by Harvard scientists revealed that meditation affects DNA and brain activity. According to John Denninger, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School who was leading the study,

There is a true biological effect. The kinds of things that happen when you meditate do have effects throughout the body, not just in the brain. His research concluded that these mind and body techniques could have such power to switch on and off genes linked to stress and immune function. (Mind Over Body: Can Meditation Help Cure Cancer?)

In Conclusion

Do you believe in possibilities?

Do you believe in yourself?

Are you ready to use the Power of Mind to heal yourself?
