History of World Patient Safety Day

Wrong tests-medicines and negligence causing more than 26 lakh deaths every year worldwide: WHO

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 2.6 million deaths worldwide occur every year due to medical carelessness alone. This is also the reason for the loss of 13.8 crore people. These figures have been released by WHO on the occasion of World Patient Safety Day. According to WHO, there is a need to increase awareness to prevent such cases.

Deaths increased due to non-learning after mistake

According to WHO, people are being harmed due to wrong prescription and negligence in treatment. Another major reason for this is the misuse of medicines. According to WHO’s Patient-Safety Coordinator Dr. Neelam Dhingra, the reason for this is a poor health system where it is not decided that a mistake will not happen again. Mistakes happen but lessons are not learned from them.

According to the WHO, the economic condition of 80 percent of the world’s population is at a low level. Even in developed countries, one out of every 10 human beings is a victim of medical mistakes. There are many reasons for this.

Such as giving wrong medicines, disturbances in the blood transfusion system or taking X-rays, surgery in the wrong part of the brain. To spread awareness about this, WHO has started World Patient Safety Day on 17 September every year. The color of the theme of this special day has been kept orange. On this occasion, famous places and monuments of the world will be illuminated with orange lights. These include the Pyramids of Giza and the Kuala Lumpur Tower.
