The custom of adding salt to baths goes way back. For instance in Greece, salt was used to heal the skin. The famous greek physician Hippocrates ( who lived around 350 BC ) used salted seawater to treat patients who suffered from skin problems or wounds. In today’s society salted baths are still a common custom, because every day we are still exposed to toxins through food and the environment. Even though, these toxins are largely removed from the body by the liver , kidneys and skin, which is often called the third kidney. The body’s capacity to get rid of toxins is not infinite. Taking salt baths to help extract toxins from the body are therefore highly recommended by many health professionals.

Why bath salt?

Bath salts are made of sea salt. Sea salt is a natural product which consist of sodium and chlorine ions. And let it just be the case that you can also find these two components in your own body. ‘ So bath salt is more than just salt.’

Right now I want you to imagine yourself taking a warm bath with sea salt. Let me tell you what happens? your pores will open widely. Which results in your body absorbing lots of minerals, sodium, magnesium, zinc, iron , calcium and potassium. These components of salt will on their turn lend a hand with the detoxification of your body. For example improving your blood circulation and skin condition. Sea salt also changes the acidity of the water. Which results in the hardness of the water to decrease. This is why your skin feels nice and soft after a bath. And let’s not forget the smell. The smell will make you feel relaxed even more.

Types of sea salt ..

Nowadays, there are many different types of sea salt, but the most well know are celtic sea salt, himalayan sea salt and dead sea salt. The main difference of these salt is the origin and the way they look. The composition of minerals hardly differs. (I would recommend you to use one of these when taking a salted bath.) Now let's dive a little bit deeper into the origin of the salts I named above ..

Celtic sea salt

Today this salt is still harvested in the Guerande region in Brittany, France by hand in a Celtic way. The seawater is collected in shallow basins at high tide, after which the sun evaporates the water. The entire process takes about two weeks, after which the salt is scooped up. This is done in the same way that the Celts harvested their salt thousand years ago, hence the name. The composition of the clay soil has a purifying effect and explains the gray color of the salt.

Himalayan sea salt

Himalayan salt is pink in color and comes from mines in Pakistan. The name Himalaya refers to the word ‘Haliet’, which means rock salt. So himalayan salt does not come from the Himalaya mountains. The pink color arises because an iron atom is built into the salt.

Dead sea salt

Dead sea salt comes from the dead sea regions in Israël. The beneficials of dead sea minerals have been known for thousands of years. David, Solomon and the Queen of Sheba have built many spa palaces on the banks. Cleopatra payed a lot of money to obtain the exclusive rights of the dead sea regions. She commissioned to build pharmaceutical and cosmetic factories, taking the necessary raw materials from the dead sea. Today you can still visit the dead sea for an amazing sea salt bath/ spa experience.

Interested in including sea salt baths to you life? stay tuned, more is coming! It’s also possible that you don’t have a bath. I will provide you with many other ways to use sea salt on wellness days.
