What in the World Is ASMR?

YouTube trend you never heard of? A lot of people say the same thing!

Have you ever heard of ASMR? I hadn't until very recently, but I was so excited to discover one of the most effective sources of relaxation and even sleeping aid I've ever seen! Not to mention, the cheapest you can get!

All you've got to do is search for "ASMR" content, probably especially on YouTube, and you'll see what I mean!

Do you ever struggle to fall asleep?

Are you surrounded by noises, chaos, and unpredictable variables in life that stress you out?

Your bodily health suffers along with you with each new level of stress that pervades your life and the amount of sleep that eludes you.

What is ASMR?

Well, if you Googled it right now, you'd probably come up with a definition like this:

"ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response): a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck, as experienced by some people in response to a specific gentle stimulus, often a particular sound"

This is exactly correct, but the long-term effects are hardly touched upon through this definition.

Essentially, your body physically feels a relaxing and gentle pleasure from certain types and volumes of sound.

  • Ocean waves swaying toward you and back and toward you and back,
  • A resting, muffled heartbeat, consistent and gentle,
  • Heavy showers of rain,
  • Quietly clicking keys on a keyboard,
  • Whispered words in your ear,
  • Soft, warm breaths close to your skin...

Did you ever go to the doctor, dentist, or optometrist and discover that the treatment you may have initially dreaded was actually soothing? That is, until you were stabbed with a needle...

The attention from and often gentle demeanor of your doctor probably gave you a tingling sense of relaxing; they gently touch you, speak to you in friendly terms, and ask you questions about yourself. Humans naturally enjoy positive attention, provided it gives them no reason to feel shy, embarrassed, or on their guard.

You certainly go to a massage therapist or, perhaps, even a hair salon for the relaxing effect it has on your body and even your mind!

The more you find outlets to let your body completely wind down and rest off-guard, the healthier your body will be in the long run.

So what does ASMR do for you?

Our lives are full of annoying sounds that even make us tense or jumpy. Each of these instances, generally to a small degree, elicits a defensive reaction from our bodies and minds.

Who else hates these particular noises?

  • The scrape of a fork against a china dish, when it just catches that shrill edge (I hate that so much!),
  • The RIIIING! of a school bell,
  • The BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! of a microwave or oven timer,
  • The BUZZZZ! of your dryer,
  • Car horns blaring by,
  • Dogs howling and barking right in your ear,
  • Children screaming and running around you like a rabid squirrel for no good reason,
  • Your invasive relatives screaming, "Hiiiii!" as they lunge for the suffocating embrace...

These are the sounds you avoid entirely when you experience ASMR; you can go to these videos to exclusively hear only pleasant and soothing sounds in your ears... letting your body melt into the soft, quiet, cushioned embrace of relaxation... perhaps even sleep...

Now watch some ASMR videos and drift... to... sleep... zzzzz...

Though I'm hardly going to show any kind of favoritism by endorsing a certain channel, I will recommend just typing these letters in a search engine.

You could search for ASMR fairy tale readers, role-playing scenarios, just videos with words of affirmation and such... I would just browse and see what you find!

Many of the videos I've come across have offered a 99 percent guarantee you will drift to sleep within 20 minutes! Shall we test that theory? After all, it's only $0!
