Squint

The problem may be congenital or exacerbated later. But in no case should it be neglected. Strabismus is squint eye problem. This means that the eyeball has moved either outwards or towards the nose. Many times it is thought that this problems will get better with age. But that is not the case in all cases. So as soon as possible, it needs treatment. Or there may be a fear of losing sight.

* What is Strabismus?

We have six muscles in each eye. When the balance of these muscles are disturbed, this problem is seen. The visual axis of our two eyes is usually parallel. Two eyes create a different image. When it reaches the brain, the brain processes it and creates an image. In medical terms it is called binocular single vision. This single vision is not created when there is strabismus. A person often sees any one (single) thing in two, which makes his daily life difficult.

In addition, if the vision is not parallel, three-dimensional or 3-D effect is not created. Depth of focus is not created. Usually these people can't enjoy 3D pictures, can't insert a thread into a needle.

In some cases, this can be a problem for both eyes. Similarly this can be also for one eye. Some people may have problems with strabismus sometimes in the left, sometimes in the right eye. In all cases, the eyes that are straight, have more pressure on them. As a result, the other eye can become 'lazy eye' when it is not working. This is called Amblyopia.

Again, as a result of not treating squint eye problems in time, eye vision may not be created. Seeing less with one eye can move it outwards.

* Why Strabismus occurs?

Problems with congenital strabismus are usually caused by disturbances in the balance of those muscles. It can also be due to neurological reasons. Paralytic strabismus is not usually congenital, but develops later. According to ophthalmologist Dr. Prashant Chakraborty, "it could be due to diabetes. May be due to a tumor on the side of the eyeball. In paralytic strabismus, there is a tendency to look at one thing in two.'' In that case, treatment is done as per the advice of a neurologist.

Treatment

There are basically three types treatments. Power check, Exercise and finally Surgery.

1) Power check : The first treatment for strabismus is to know the power of the eye. It is also possible for a one-year-old child. For those with congenital problems, this treatment is started within the first two years. In most cases, one group has high plus power, with their eyes moving toward both noses. It is called Isotropia. Again the other group has high minus power, with their eyes outstretched. This is called Exotropia. When the eyeball moves upwards, it is called Hypertropia. And when it moves downwards, it is called Hypotropia. In all cases the problem is solved with glasses. In many cases prism glass is used when ordinary glasses do not work.

2) Patching : Some people need patching with glasses. That is to see with one eye while the other eye is closed. To strengthen the eye that has low vision, the other eye is blindfolded. But just patching is not fruitful. t is also important to use glasses with him.

3) Exercises : If these two do not solve the problem, then there are a few exercises that can be done at home. These are called Binocular Exercises.

4) Surgery : Many may be having their first power check after the age of fifteen, or in their mid-twenties, many may feel the need for treatment for strabismus. Surgery is done if it does not work with glasses or exercise. However, this is not a major surgery, muscles that are usually affected by this imbalance are repaired.

Resolving some misconceptions :

Strabismus may return after surgery. This is neither entirely true, nor is it false. It depends on what age, how, and on whom it is being done. Exercises may also be required after surgery. Not one, but multiple surgeries may be required.

If the vision of the two eyes is not formed, then the eyes can be straightened by surgery. The purpose of the surgery is twofold — for cosmetic purpose and for looking good. Enhancing the physiological quality or vision. Cosmetic surgery can be done at any age.

Treatment of strabismus is possible. Timely awareness is needed.
