What are the best crystal healing stones for beginners who want to calm the heck down? There are hundreds of crystals, minerals, and good old-fashioned rocks to choose from. There are thousands of pieces of folklore about them.

Meanwhile, you might be a newer collector who found out just this minute that a rock is not the same thing as a mineral. Where do you begin?

Mental overwhelm is never the primrose path to a stress-free existence. That’s why I like to start people off with three stones that are lower cost, easy to find, and even easier to work with. You’ll get no headaches or gotchas from these crystals.

The calming energy of amethyst

Many crystal workers find that amethyst harmonizes well with the third eye (forehead) and crown chakras. There’s something calming about a meditation where you lay back and place a small amethyst on that spot we all associate with our invisible (occult) third eye. An amethyst resting there has helped many open up to their spiritual and psychic selves.

Sometimes, a vision of the future may play out in front of us. Sometimes, we receive a burst of inspiration about how to achieve that future.

Other times, we simply grow a little sleepy. A good thing. A relaxed body and a sleepy mind are calm. Some may consider that form of calmness nothing more than a fancy nap. Admit it, though. When you wake, you feel so much more relaxed and at peace than when you started.

Stress relief from rose quartz

How I love polished pebbles of pale pink quartz. While rose quartz is a heart chakra stone, it tends to draw affectionate pets and friends — not heavy-duty romantic dramas.

Many people like to wear rose quartz at the level of their heart. Since it’s a common quartz pebble, it isn’t necessarily found already set in a lot of jewelry. Some of us learn to wire-wrap it to make an impromptu pendant. Others pay an artist at the rock shop or the gem and mineral show to do it for them.

In recent years, some women have begun to wear it in their bra. I’m going to stick with wire-wrap for my stone, but their method works too. The point is to place a small rose quartz pebble where it can quietly soothe the energies from your heart.

Smoky quartz as a not-to-worry stone

Like many people, I find it useful to have a smoky quartz pebble in my pocket. I also keep a natural smoky quartz double-terminated crystal in my bedroom. This stone fights negativity, so it’s often used to chase away dark moods, depression, and even nightmares.

Because so many of us use this stone to fight depression, let me remind you a crystal can’t do all the work. It’s a helper that offers support — not a crutch. Don’t abuse your smoky quartz by asking it to do what a trained therapist or doctor should be doing.

Used wisely, smoky quartz can be a great comfort. Used unwisely, it might go on strike. This stone will never harm you, but it could bow out of taking action if it thinks you’re not doing your part.

If you sense your smoky quartz feels overworked, set it out overnight to bathe in the light of the full moon. In the morning, hold the stone in the palm of your hand. Meditate on how you will move toward peace and away from negativity by working together with your crystal.

Does crystal healing really work? What if I don’t really believe?

That’s marvelous. Being open, but not credulous, is a great way to enter into a state often called, “beginner’s mind.”

You're not making assumptions. You’re not stressing out about, “Oh, Lord, this just has to work.” You’re experimenting — trying something new to see where it leads.

Playing with these crystals is a doorway into a more relaxed state of mind. You’re not clutching at the magic. You’re letting it happen.

Peacefulness is so often a playful energy, isn’t it? We forget that sometimes. Amethyst, rose quartz, and smoky quartz are beautiful tools for crystal healing — a wonderful gift from a generous Earth. They’re not dour and serious. They’re pretty and fun.

Here. Hold one of your new crystals in the open palm of your hand.

Can you feel the tension dropping away from your muscles?

You’re already feeling calmer and less anxious.
