It would be no surprise for me to know that any of you have seen the symbol of the seven chakras. The symbolic rainbow circles presented usually throughout a human body. These flyers displaying the seven chakras can be found throughout any city in a windowsill and whatnot. So many of us see this on a day-to-day basis but might not even know what a chakra is… much more what all seven of them are. The seven chakras are seven main areas in the human body in which energy flows in. These areas serve different purposes in our body and overall lifestyle choices.

The seven chakras originate from spiritual practices and traditions. They're commonly linked to the religion of Hinduism and Buddhism. Which for those who do not know, Hinduism is defined by the United Religion Initiative as “The fundamental teaching of Hinduism, or Vedanta, is that a human being's basic nature is not confined to the body or the mind. Beyond both of these is the spirit or the spark of God within the soul. This spirit is within us and also within everything we see.” Then, Buddhism is a form of practice based on Gautama Buddha's teachings (creator of Buddhism) to pursue a permanent state of happiness based on good morality and overall personal wellbeing with similar characteristics to Hinduism. There has been early evidence of the chakras' existence found in the Vedas, which are described by the Ancient History Encyclopedia as “a collection of hymns and other ancient religious texts written in India between about 1500 and 1000 BCE.” As mentioned briefly throughout numerous blogs and Buddhist forums, the chakras are a tool created to help pursue enlightenment in one's life. They are a commonly taught practice and followed by Buddhists but also used by people that look for overall improvement in one's lifestyle.

Now onto the chakras. The chakras begin at the base of one's lower spinal cord. This is the root chakra (otherwise known by the Sanskrit language name of “Muladhara”), and it is linked to all that is red. The root chakra focuses on one's survival needs. Needs regarding things like safety, shelter, food, financial and all external are met through this area. Someone with a well-aligned root chakra has a comfortable home and a stable income with all their physical survival needs to be met. Someone with a misaligned root chakra faces fears, instability and just an overall feeling of not being grounded with reality.

The second chakra is the sacral chakra and it is located just below the navel area (otherwise known by the Sanskrit language name of “Svadhishthana”). This chakra deals with one's emotions, creativity, fantasies, and overall pleasure. This chakra is linked to all that is orange. When the sacral chakra is in balance, someone is able to receive pleasure in a healthy balanced manner. We are able to be sensual and experience intimacy and connection. Someone with a misaligned sacral chakra can feel emotionally numb, a lack of satisfaction, a fear of death, overindulge in pleasure and/or feel out of touch with themselves.

Then onto the third chakra, the solar plexus chakra, which is located in one's upper navel area (otherwise known by the Sanskrit language name of “Manipura”). This area focuses on one's will power, self-discipline, confidence, and overall intellectual abilities. This chakra is linked to all that is yellow. Someone with a well aligned solar plexus has their “act together” and is assertive with their work. Someone with a misaligned solar plexus experiences trouble with their self-esteem, trouble relaxing, fear of rejection, low will, trust issues as well as sensitivity to criticism.

The fourth chakra is the heart chakra, which can be found in the center of one's body (otherwise known by the Sanskrit language name of “Anahata”). This is as simple as it sounds; it deals with love and one's relationships. This chakra is linked to all that is green. A well-aligned heart chakra represents itself with a person being able to feel unconditional love for themselves and all living beings. People with misaligned heart chakras feel no love towards themselves and/or others and will indulge in unhealthy types of love.

The fifth chakras the throat chakras this one is located in the throat (otherwise known by the Sanskrit language name of "Vishuddha”). This deals with communication, expression, sociality and finding one's voice or purpose. This chakra is linked to all that is light blue. People with well-aligned throat chakras can have healthy discussions and find balance with their voice. Someone with a misaligned throat chakra struggles with communicating their truth, tells lies, struggles to listen to others, lacks control with speech, experiences fear in speaking out and in some cases excessive shyness.

The sixth chakra is the most popularly known chakra, the third eye (otherwise known by the Sanskrit language name of “Anja”). Found between one's eyes, this area focuses on wisdom, inspiration, personal vision, and intuition. This area is all about ones creative and spiritual needs. This chakra is linked to all that is a darker blue hue. Usually, it is common to hear people make jokes about being awake and having their third eye open, but a person with an awakened third eye is capable of looking at the bigger picture in life and lives life with a good sense of purpose.

The last chakra is the crown chakra, which is found on the top of one's head. (otherwise known by the Sanskrit language name of “Sahasrara”). This area deals with understanding, connecting and overall a higher frequency of consciousness. This chakra is linked to all that is violet. A well-aligned crown chakra expresses itself with a feeling of ecstasy, awareness of higher consciousness, connection to the limitless and is aware of mindfulness. Someone with an imbalance in the crown chakra has a false sense of reality, lives mainly in their own head, faces disconnection to the world and could live with many mental limitations.

For someone to reach enlightenment in life they have to have their chakras balanced. As stated by the DiamondWay Buddhism website, an informational site dedicated to help guide people through the journey of Buddhism, “Through understanding the law of cause and effect, using practical tools like meditation to gain insight and develop compassion and wisdom, we—all of us—can tap into our potential to realize the ultimate goal of enlightenment.” Once someone obtains all seven chakras in alignment, they will face nirvana and reach their own personal form of happiness. That's what I personally appreciate the most about Buddhism: they’re aware that everyone's form of ultimate heaven differs from person to person. To fulfill one's chakras one has to be fully committed to it. There is no right way to align one's chakras. Many believe they have to pay ridiculous amounts of money to receive aid but it's all simpler than it seems. Alignment can be met through the form of meditation, yoga practices as well as the use of reflexology. One can help support the balance of the chakras by eating certain foods that pertain to each chakra color group, chanting mantras/affirmations, using aromatherapy (essential oils), as well as incorporating the use of certain crystals within one’s mediation session as well as listening to certain binaural frequencies to help “speed” up the process of healing. But overall through an evaluation of one's life and highlighting areas of improvement, one can identify misalignment with their chakras. Once the areas are identified, one can find methods to improve these problems thus balancing their chakras. For example, if one is facing imbalance with their heart chakra, they can help heal this area by mainly incorporating self-love, expressing love towards others (verbally, physically, etc), establishing boundaries, and meditating with crystals such as Rose Quartz (my personal favorite), Rhodonite, Pink Calcite as well as Fluorite! Then they can listen to frequencies 528 hz and 432 hz while meditating or going through one’s regular day-to-day tasks. This supports the ideal that through hard work, one can find it within themself to reach their form of nirvana and ultimate enlightenment in life. It can all seem very overwhelming and complicated, but it’s important to note that in this dimension anything is truly possible if one truly envisions it for themselves. ;)
