I drink a green smoothie every day, and have for almost a decade! So this post, explaining “how to make a green smoothie” with all my tips and tricks has been something I’ve wanted to write since I started this blog!

Leafy Greens: Spinach is my favorite because it breaks down easily in a blender, though kale, bok choy and parsley is a runner up.

Liquid ingredients: Almond milk, Coconut water, Orange juice, Beet juice, Water, Aloe juice

Ripe Fruit/Veggie ingredients: Apple, Banana, Strawberry, Pear, Mango, Blueberries, Raspberries, Pineapple, Grapes, Orange, Peach, Papaya, Beets, Sweet Potato, Celery, Cucumber, Ginger, Avocado

Optional Ingredients: Something to make the texture smooth and creamy, like banana, yogurt, coconut milk

HOW TO MEAL PREP GREEN SMOOTHIES

I think that green smoothies are the best when they’re served fresh, straight from the blender. So I meal prep smoothies by having all the ingredients on hand and ready to go. This means I always have my freezer stocked with frozen fruit and greens and pre-portion all of the add-ins like protein powder!

Next, I’ll share my favorite green smoothie recipe! It’s a simple green smoothie for beginners that is naturally sweetened with fruit (no added sugars) and loaded with greens

Green Machine

  • 1 cup of spinach
  • a few mint leaves
  • 1/2 lime

  • 1 cup of kale or spinach
  • 2-3 celery stalks
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1 tbsp chia or flaxseeds

HOW TO MAKE A GREEN SMOOTHIE!

Okay, now that we’ve talked about all the delicious ingredients that go into making a green smoothie, let’s actually dive into how to make a green smoothie recipe!

  • STEP 1: USE A VITAMIX BLENDER! Go to Amazon associate and get link!
  • STEP 2: Choose an item from each category above. Leafy green, Liquid, Fruits or veggies of your choice and last but not least choose an optional ingredient.
  • STEP 3: Blend the leafy greens with a liquid base together first. Then once blended add the fruits and blend again! Be sure to use this method to get the perfect smoothie every single time.

A Few Smoothie Hacks

BLEND GREENS AND FREEZE IN CUBES

If you don’t have a lot of space in your freezer, you can take the fresh spinach (or other greens of choice) and blend with a small amount of water until the mixture is smooth. Then freeze in ice cube trays and store frozen cubes of greens in an airtight container in the freezer. I used to do this when I lived on my own as a college student!

If you are making this simple green smoothie recipe as a beginner, then I recommend sticking with spinach as the green of choice.

I buy multiple 2.5 lb bags of fresh spinach or kale from Costco every time we go (usually every other month) and toss them right into the freezer when we get home from our trip. That way I know that the spinach is always fresh and that I’m stocked for the months ahead.
