The WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, social, and mental well-being. It doesn’t merely refer to the absence of infirmity or disease. While it unifies mental and physical health, people often prioritize physical well-being over mental health.

The concept of mental health refers to the well-being of an individual, including their emotional, social, and psychological aspects. It can affect how we think, act, and feel. Aside from being able to cope with stress, mental health also plays a role in our decision-making process. In this article, we will take a look at the relationship between mental and physical health.

Societal Perception

Despite the importance of mental health, society still views it as a lesser priority than physical health.

The self-imposed and social stigma is very harmful. They can prevent people from accessing the necessary mental health care and support. When we treat substance use and mental health disorders as a choice instead of a medical condition, we create an environment of shame and blame.

This is why it’s essential that people talk about it. Being able to ask for help is a powerful message that shows support. It can help build a culture that values mental health. Awareness of mental health issues can also help decrease the stigma surrounding them.

Relationship Between the Two

Your behavioral and physical well-being can also be affected by your mental health. Poor mental health can lead to various health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

People suffering from depression reportedly experience various changes in how their bodies function, which could negatively affect their overall well-being. These include fatigue, inflammation, and heart rate issues. A lack of mental health can also prevent individuals from working on their physical health, which can affect one’s energy levels.

Being physically fit can help you live longer. It can also lower your risk of getting mental illness. Being active and fit can also help people feel more at ease and have more positive thoughts about their lives. A healthy lifestyle can lower the risk of developing various chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Takeaway

Although the relationship between mental and physical health is complex, it’s still important to maintain a good mental and physical health. Doing so can help you lead a healthy life.

It’s okay to focus on one area of yourself instead of the other if you’re struggling with a particular problem. Just keep in mind that both have a significant impact on one another.
