Media and health nutritionists all over the world are talking about the long list of benefits now associated with omega three. People of all ages from children to adults are being encouraged to increase their fatty acid intake for better overall health

Many people would like to start taking Omega three supplements for a variety of reasons but really don't know what their dosage amount should be. Which is not helped by the fact there is no Government set RDA yet.

There is however a general guideline you can take from doctors that have studied the research.

But before heading out to buy some Omega three fish oils, it's important to know that not all supplements are the same.

The most important thing to understand is that most of the benefits research has revealed are down to the DHA content.

Omega three is made up of three main fatty acids known as Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA). The amounts of these should be listed on the packaging of any quality supplement.

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)

DHA is mostly found in the brain and eyes of the human body and is therefore one of the main fatty acids that helps those who would like to maintain healthy brain and eye function.

When there is a DHA deficiency in the body, it can affect the brain and eyes in many different ways. It's also been proven that people who suffer from depression have very low levels of DHA in their cerebral cortex.

By supplementing DHA into a regular diet, it can help prevent or alleviate symptoms associated with the brain like Alzheimer's and Schizophrenia while also helping instances of macular degeneration in the eyes.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)

EPA is the fatty acid that's known to lower inflammation throughout the body. This is especially good to promote healthy blood flow and cell development.

EPA has also been associated with DHA to help symptoms of depression, Schizophrenia and serious cases of suicidal thoughts. Both fatty acids are essential for healthy cells and cell regeneration.

Omega Three Dosage Amount for Adults and Children

For general health and well-being, the following dosage amounts have been suggested by doctors for healthy adults and children. They are not recommended for anyone who is currently taking medication or has particular health problem. A doctor should always be consulted to give the proper dosage amounts relative to current health and body needs.

It's been proven that Omega three with DHA is a natural blood thinner and should not be used by anyone who is taking blood thinners or has a history of thin blood. There are other ways to benefit from Omega three but the doctor should always be consulted prior to dietary changes.

For fish oil capsules that contain 300mg to 500 mg of Omega three fatty acids, the daily suggested dosage for adults is approximately 1 to 2 capsules each day. These capsules can be taken with or without food.

For average healthy children over the age of 6, the suggested dosage for Omega three is one capsule of 300mg a day. This dosage may increase with particular needs, especially those who have issues with learning and development but should always be consulted with a medical expert beforehand.

But this guideline should also be looked at alongside the DHA content, as doctors also advise taking a minimum of 250mg per day of EPA and DHA. So make sure your supplement has at least this amount per capsule.
