For quite a while, the world has been very concerned with our immune systems in the era of a strange new virus. But, the truth is, we should always consider the importance of immune health and what we can do to help our internal warriors win their battles against illness.
While nothing out there is really a sure thing, if you take the right steps it can make a big difference in helping to keep you healthy. So, with that said, here are my personal, and non-professional, suggestions based on what I have done as well as what I have read and learned from others.
My Top 3
Vitamin C
People haven't been touting vitamin c for generations for nothing. It is an easy to obtain (though diet or in pill form) and is quite possibly the most essential ingredient to a serious immune wellness routine. As most people know, this is obtainable by eating a variety of fruits, especially oranges.
Zinc
This metal-based chemical element is often used in holding off colds or other sickness when they are first starting. Keeping it as part of a daily dietary routine can be a good way to try to keep things in check before they become a problem.
Selenium
While this one may sound like something from a radioactive accident (like Plutonium or Uranium for example) it is simply a non-metallic chemical element that can be a big weapon in the war against illness.
Those listed above are what I personally call my "Big Three" for immune health. But there are several others that I would say earn an honorable mention.
Honorable Mention
Vitamin D
It's been said that sunlight is the best disinfectant. While this phase might have originated from a figurative concept about morality and ethics, it also holds some water when it comes to health. Vitamin D can easily be obtained from an adequate exposure to sunlight. If you live in an area in which several months of the year sunlight may be lacking, such as a place that has a long, cold winter, you can always opt for D in a bottle or even an injection from your doctor. Whole milk is also a great option to get your D in.
Elderberry
While my first exposure to this substance was in the form of jelly, it has become very popular for health purposes. It can be bought in a syrup or in gummies and perhaps in other forms as well. And unlike some other things out there, it actually tastes good.
Not Directly Immune But...
As you may know, the immune system is based in your gut. So, having good gut health is important as well. There are two supplements I highly recommend for promoting and sustaining good gut health. The first is acidophilus, which are good bacteria that can be found in yogurt and other foods as well as pills. The second is papaya enzyme. As expected, this one comes from the Papaya fruit. Again, you can also get this in a pill form.
Overall thoughts
When looking for an immune supplement, you should always try to find one with as many of these base ingredients as possible, starting with the big three. And of course, the dosage of each is important. Overdoing the dosage can be just as bad if not worse than not making use of these items at all. Always look for items with a lot of reviews and positive feedback. There are many manufactures out there and finding an option you can trust to do the job is probably the most important thing of all.
