My Fight for Life – chris.backtolife and a Rare Neurological Nightmare

Introduction

Chris with my son Jonas

Hi folks, I am Christoph Muth, from Germany.

I want to take you with me—on my journey, through my current nightmare—with the hope that one day it will all get better. That maybe, just maybe, this story will find a good ending, like the ones life sometimes writes. Or like in a fairy tale that lets us sleep peacefully at night.

We’ve already tried a lot. It’s been two years and three months since it all began. It started with a mistake—one that changed everything.

I had been on Lexapro for 20 years. Even the smallest change in dosage would cause brain zaps and flu-like symptoms.

Still, in December 2022, An accident, injuries, a stay in hospital I was subsequently unresponsive, unconscious and there was no agreement with the doctors that I had been taking Lexapro for many years, most recently 7 mg, and that you can't just switch To another drug that can have fatal consequences..

I was abruptly switched from Lexapro to Cymbalta. That switch, without a proper taper, triggered a severe neurological reaction—one that has never gone away. And what followed was something no one expected: a progressive collapse of my nervous system.

After several months of increased pulse, dizziness and balance problems, at some point the nervous system calmed down at least a little, but it began to tingle and feel unwell immediately after the changeover.

I will tell you more about the further developments in detail in the next few chapters To be continued, as they say ...

This website is my starting point. A place where you can follow how my life and illness are developing, what we’re trying to do, what helps, and how people can support me.

Family cohesion is important and real friends often emerge during a crisis

I am deeply grateful for my family—especially my older son Jonas, who launched a campaign months ago so I could receive treatment. He has spent countless hours with me, together with many helpers, trying to find ways forward. In today’s world, it’s not something to take for granted: people who stand by you, give their time, and help you hold on to goals and hope.

Two years may not sound like a long time. But when you’re sick and hoping that the next treatment, the next little improvement, the next piece of support might help you breathe again—it can feel like forever. Each day drags like an hour that never ends. And yet, paradoxically, it all passes too quickly. Like holding your daughter in your arms, wishing time would stop. That moment you want to last forever.

Sometimes it’s a blessing that we don’t know the future. If I had known what was coming, I might have lost my mind from fear and despair. From the initial crash to today, this has been a battle against time, symptoms, medical ignorance, and financial ruin.

We’ve received a lot of support through a GoFundMe campaign—mainly through people on TikTok. But the money we raised flowed away quickly, swallowed by therapies that didn’t work or only brought minimal relief. Now we are hoping for further support to access vital new therapies that might finally break through the wall.

This is only the beginning of my story. In the next chapters, I’ll share more details about my symptoms, the medical findings, and how this nightmare has unfolded—from withdrawal reactions to confirmed autoimmune brain inflammation affecting my brainstem and cerebellum.
