So I came across this in a group that I’m a part of and thought... this is the most accurate thing I’ve read in terms of health and self care. Now some people wonder how does this relate to health or self care? It’s simple really, and I’ll explain.

YOU, your health, and well-being are the bank! Now whether it’s daily, weekly, or monthly, you wouldn’t think of not checking your bank account. Making sure funds are there, that deposits were made to cover expenditures, and avoiding overdraft fees, right? Now take that same applied theory, and think of your body (health overall). Are you spending, and not making deposits? Are you depositing daily, and making the investment? Still seems complicated?

Ok, let’s try this: deposits are going to be your good nutrition, exercise, and self improvement. Your spending will be the “bad” habits, not enough exercise, poor nutrition, diseases like diabetes type 2, heart disease, lack of sleep, alcohol etc. You have your body and health your entire life. What’s stopping you from making the investment in yourself?

You wouldn’t just continue to spend from your bank account blindly hoping for the best. You work to receive a paycheck, and deposit that paycheck faithfully every time payday comes around. You budget out your bills for the month, and make sure you’re saving a little too. Why wouldn’t you do this for your health?

Poor health has so many complications associated with it, not just the dreadful weight gain. You can develop joint issues, disease, limited mobility, wreck your self image, and self esteem. In general we should be treating our bodies and minds like the most important bank we will ever be members of. By taking care of it, we can live longer, more productive, healthy lives. I know it sounds so easy when you read it, and honestly it is. No one says to make this change you have to start as an Olympic athlete, don’t be intimidated, and find excuses not too. Find the excuses/reasons too.

It all starts with simple changes. Here’s where changing your thought process is the biggest, yet easiest, hurdle to get through. There’s a simple exercise to demonstrate how easy it is to change your mindset. Give yourself ten seconds, look around the room for anything brown. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... now name everything red. See you weren’t focused on red. Now give yourself another 10 seconds, and then name everything red.

You don’t have to turn your life upside down right away. Start with little things like exchanging unhealthy snacks for berries and nuts, incorporate more vegetables, maybe start taking a 30 min walk.

It doesn’t have to be drastic to make a difference. It doesn’t have to be cold turkey that give you up your favorite foods. You don’t have to do sprints your first day on the track or trail. You don’t even have to lift heavy the first time you visit the gym. The truth is it all starts in the mind.

Change your mindset, change your life. Believe in yourself, because you can do this. Check your daily balance just like you do your checking account. Invest in yourself with the same type of enthusiasm you do with your money. Your wellbeing is your currency. Make sure you spend it wisely, and replace it with care.

The little steps will lead to more little steps and before you know it your on your way with little resistance, and a commitment to yourself, you had long ago forgotten about. You only live once, why not live it to the fullest in the best state you possibly can. It’s never too late to make those changes for a better, healthier you.
