What mantra meditation is and how it works.

The simple explanation first, please.

Due to the extensive amount of information available today, it is often difficult to provide a simple explanation. I will do my best.

To understand what mantra meditation is, we must first understand what a mantra is. For our purposes here, Beyond Little Thoughts had to formulate its own meaning. A mantra is a hum, word, phrase, or statement either spoken or sung, aloud or in the mind, with intention. Charms, incantations, spells, hymns, or prayers are all variations of mantras. Mantra meditation is the repeated release of a mantra during meditation.

Alright, that wasn’t so difficult.

It is certainly a good description considering the word 'mantra' itself has over a dozen meanings in Sanskrit dictionaries alone. With additional exploration of different cultures, we may end up with dozens of meanings for one word. Despite the similarity between most of the definitions, there are some subtle differences but we will refer to Beyond Little Thoughts in this article.

Sanskrit means 'instrument of thought' in the yogic practices many are familiar with. Of course, there are numerous other interpretations of mantra, and it can also have several meanings, even in Sanskrit.

It happened again.

It is not the first article I began and trashed half way through, as new perspectives and scientific data introduced to me during my research overshadowed my original intention for being able to explain the advantages of creating your own mantras.

Remember science class?

As you may recall, science class covered sub particles and atoms. Atoms are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. These particles move, some quicker than others, forcing atoms to vibrate.

Atoms are the components of everything so what are atoms?

The smallest quantity of an element is an atom. Elements such as oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon that make up the Universe. What we know of it thus far, of course. It’s all vibrating.

Do mantras have anything to do with vibrating atoms?

In 1998, physicists were capable of distinguishing an atom by measuring the frequency of the vibration.

The frequencies of mantras.

When we speak, or even imagine, with a specific emotion, it emerges as a frequency, or energy. Ever hear the expression that some people are on the same wavelength? It is the same principle, similar frequencies, energies, attract each other.

This notion makes sense for me in a few situations.

One would be karma. The principle that you receive what you release. If you release positive frequencies, they attract other positive frequencies. The same would affect negative frequencies.

Second, mantras and mudrās. When performing either one, or a fusion of both, you are releasing frequencies that are favorable to the atoms that make up your body. This is why I believe it is best to invent your own mantra.

Creating your own mantras.

Only you are capable of judging the frequencies most effective for you since everyone will have varying frequencies that are pleasing to them. One frequency could be enjoyable to you but unpleasant, even painful, to someone else.

To create your own mantra, you only need to recognize what frequency makes you feel a certain emotion or visualize a certain thought. It could be a melody or section of one, the sound of a certain instrument, or even a spoken sentence. Affirmations are commonly utilized as mantras.

Mantras are built by intention and it is the intention where the frequency derives from. The intentions make you feel a certain way, appearing as a frequency to attract comparable frequencies to fulfill your intention. Since you are the only one in a position to ascertain how distinctive a frequency makes you feel, it is best to invent your own mantras.

This is how prayers, hymns, charms, and spells function.

How does it all come together?

Since affirmations are the most common mantras, let’s consider how it all works.

You choose or create an affirmation that you repeat on a daily basis, perhaps a part of a daily routine. The more you repeat this mantra, the more you believe it, the stronger the frequency. It changes your way of thinking so your choices lead you closer to your intention while attracting similar energies to assist you.

Beyond Little Thoughts

As usual, my research often raises additional questions.

Has the human capability to detect natural vibrations diminished by evolution as our auditory sense enhanced and we became highly dependent on language? Perhaps we are still capable of sensing these vibrations if we quiet our minds through mantra meditation.
