Autumn is a time of beauty, change, transformation, and recharge.
However, amongst all the stress, the shortening days, the growing responsibilities, and the cold weather, it can be very difficult to remember to appreciate all the magic that fall has to offer.
I find, especially during the autumn season, I have a hard time feeling energized, motivated, or even at ease. These are some of the things I'm trying to manifest on a daily basis, to fully embrace the beautiful season that surrounds me; and hopefully, you can, too.
As difficult as it may be, we all have things, people, grudges, burdens, or emotions that we know we need to let go of.
Letting go allows us to move past the things that we cannot change. And this, in turn, lets us move forward.
Letting go can be a hard and painful process... it feels almost like wrenching people, habits, or things somewhat violently from our lives. But much like a garden that has been freshly weeded, we thrive and grow in the space that is left behind.
As the trees shed their precious leaves, we too can begin our own process of shedding: shedding our fears, insecurities, our self-doubt, and unhealthy thoughts.
Embrace the Change
The fact that change is a constant of life is all too often, painfully obvious. Change can be sudden, jarring, unexpected, and leave us feeling lost or insecure or both.
Know that change is a crucial part of the autumn seasonand that growth cannot continue without this process.
As the trees change and prepare for the hard winter ahead, let's try to do our best to remember that these, sometimes difficult, changes are essential for growth, healing, and progress.
This time of year, we reach the Fall Equinox, when the daylight hours and hours of darkness are exactly the same.
It's also the time of year when our responsibilities seem to out-weigh our abilities, and having a 27-hour-day seems like the only solution.
It's always this time of year when I have the most difficulty managing my time, responsibilities, and goals. I all too often find myself frustrated and disheartened because I feel like I just can't do all the things I need to do.
Finding balance in our busy lives is a personal process. It can mean anything from taking on fewer responsibilities at work, to not having as many social commitments, or even just taking time to yourself to take a bath...
Either wayfinding a balance is an essential part of finding peace within ourselves this autumn season and any season, so whatever you need to cut out of your schedule, or make time for, do it.
This topic goes back to the idea of change.
Autumn is a time of transformation, when the trees' leaves turn bright red, yellow, gold as all the nutrients from the leaves go to the tree's core, to prepare for winter.
We can also allow the best within ourselves to shine from within us, and nourish us through emotionally tough times.
Although I never know when a transformation is happening (let's be honest here, who does?), allowing ourselves to be true to whatever challenges and changes we are going through can help the transformation along, so we can be our best selves.
Rest & Recharge
In preparation for winter, it is important to make sure that we are well rested.
Amongst the hustle and bustle of the Fall season, it's easy to forget that you are just as much of a responsibility as your responsibilities (it's funny how that works).
Studies show that if you aren't getting enough sleep, certain parts of your brain can't function normally. Solving problems, dealing with emotions, controlling behavior, and making decisions are all functions of the brain that are compromised if you haven't been getting enough sleep.
Taking the time to rest and restore our minds and our bodies can make a surprising difference in how we think and feel.
Although it can be a stressful time of year, autumn truly is a magical part of the year, filled with natural beauty and colors that won't be seen again for 12 whole months.
And while it is important to focus on how we can all be our best selves, don't forget to stop and admire the autumn leaves.
