During the pooja:

  1. Performing Sankalpa (pouring water into a pot and seeking Lord’s blessings)
  2. Chanting of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times using a Japa Mala.
  3. Offer flowers and Dhurva grass to the Shivaling and perform Abhishekam with water and milk.
  4. Worshipping Shiva with fruits, lamp, bel leaves, water, and incense. 
  5. Havana is performed at the end of the pooja. 

The procedure to perform the Havana is to light up a fire and not allow it to extinguish for 24 hours. After that, the Pooja is done in 4 Prahars which is an interval of 6 hours. 

It is considered auspicious to start the pooja on ​​Maha Shivaratri as it is the power day of Lord Shiva. After completing this day, the Puja is held for 2 months every Monday. It is held in the name of the person who is facing an untimely death. When the Homam is done with proper dedication, it may reduce the chance of the diseased person facing death by any means. It can also help reduce long-prone sickness, those struggling on the death bed and reduce the fear of death.

Meaning of Maha Mrityunjaya Homam Mantra

Om! We worship you, the three-eyed Lord Shiva, who is always fragrant with spiritual essence and who is the nourisher of all of us. 

May HE cut the bonds of Worldly life like how cucumber is cut from the bonds of a creeper. Thus liberating us from the Fear of Death. 

Chant the above mantra early in the morning after taking a bath. Face towards the east, use a Japa Mala, or to increase the intensity, use a Rudraksha Mala and chant it. Chant the prayers with a pure and focused mind and do it 5, 11, 21, or 10 times. If you are short of time in the morning, it can be done at any time of the day.
