I Chased Happiness for Years. What I Really Needed Was Peace.

Why I stopped waiting for the big moments to make my life feel meaningful.

By Inbar ShaharPublished 3 months ago • 1 min read

For most of my life I thought happiness was the destination. I thought if I could just arrange the right circumstances — the right relationship, the right home, the right version of myself — I would finally arrive. It took me decades to understand I was looking for the wrong thing entirely.

Perhaps happiness is the flower.

And peace is everything surrounding it.

The wedding matters.

The vacation matters.

The dream coming true matters.

But so does an ordinary Tuesday.

So does a peaceful morning.

So does the feeling of not being in a hurry.

Because if we only allow ourselves to live during the highlights, we miss most of our lives.

And perhaps part of getting older is realizing that life isn't something that happens only on the best days.

It's happening now.

In this cup of coffee.

In this conversation.

In this evening.

In this ordinary moment that, one day, we may realize was never ordinary at all.
