What is dopamine?

Dopamine is understood with various names like pleasure chemical or motivation molecule. As a brain chemical and a neurotransmitter, it promotes reward-motivation behavior. If doing any activity generates feelings of delight, dopamine prompts you to try to do an equivalent activity again.

If you now return to the initial question of why you choose another drink or complete the unfinished trek/marathon, dopamine is that the answer. Dopamine doesn't create the sensation of delight itself. It only promotes behavior that results in pleasure. Therefore, not everyone advocates calling dopamine because it is a pleasure chemical.

Unfortunately, dopamine doesn't understand the difference between good and bad habits. If doing something causes you to be happy, dopamine will cause you to either complete it or repeat it. Therefore, dopamine causes you to chase your ambition and pursue your dreams. Equivalent dopamine also creates the urge to light another cigarette.

Dopamine rewards any behavior which activates your pleasure cells. Whether you employ it for goal setting or addiction is your choice.

Do you notice the difference between performing in an occupation you hate and one you love? In fact, we all do.

If you're keen on playing the guitar, you would like to stay going at it. If you're keen on dancing, you do not mind dancing all night. If your dream is to be an entrepreneur, you're brimming with energy even after working for 80 hours every week.

Dopamine has existed since caveman times. Simon Sinek explains how dopamine works in his talk – Why Leaders Eat Last

Back within the caveman times, we had to hunt to eat and survive. Dopamine caused the caveman to travel hunting to possess the pleasure of eating. it had been a gift system that encouraged good behavior. The psychology of achieving goals features a direct association with dopamine.

Similarly, if you've set a goal and work towards it, you are feeling better as you inch closer to achieving it. the higher the progress you create, the more you would like to travel further. At every step of your progress, you get an attempt of dopamine in your body which motivates you to try to do more. Dopamine plays a task altogether of the subsequent activities:

  • Getting things done
  • Chasing your dream
  • Completing an item on your to-do list
  • Fighting fatigue to finish the marathon
  • Hitting the gym
  • Trekking a difficult and tall mountain to succeed in the summit

Dopamine and bad habits

If Dopamine could only motivate us with the proper things the planet would be such a far better place. Unfortunately, dopamine also can promote the behavior of bad habits which induce pleasure. for instance, dopamine is additionally responsible for:

  • Smoking more cigarettes
  • Drinking a couple of more drinks
  • The urge to gamble again
  • Addiction to drugs like cocaine, heroin
  • The looking for sex

What else does dopamine do?

Dopamine does quite just induce reward-enforced behavior. Dopamine plays its part in memory, behavior, cognition, sleep, learning and other areas. However, the probability that you simply hear about dopamine from these areas is slim. Topics like motivation, addiction, sex, alcohol, gambling grab more eyes and ears.

Conclusion: The way to use dopamine to your advantage

Dopamine is ingrained in our bodies and motivates a gift behavior system. Therefore, whenever you've got an enormous task to accomplish, break it down into several smaller tasks, where each seems like a micro goal. If you've got trouble breaking down tasks ask – the way to use short-term goals to realize future goals.

With an outsized number of smaller tasks, you'll get an attempt of dopamine whenever you finish one. The great vibe thanks to the dopamine will motivate you to end another task, then another, followed by some more. In no time, you'll reach halfway through the large goal you set to realize. Now since the ultimate destination seems closer, you'll feel more motivated to stay going and achieve your goals. Dopamine promotes any sort of goal-directed behavior.

If you would like to possess only one takeaway from the article then break your large goals into smaller ones. Dopamine will act as the catalyst to finish them for you.
