How to Find Inner Peace

Wisdom for Difficult Days

By Inbar ShaharPublished 3 months ago • 4 min read

There was a time in my life when I believed inner peace was waiting somewhere in the future.

I thought...

After I get married...

After I buy a house...

After I find my soulmate...

After I lose the weight...

After I get promoted...

There was always another "after."

Another destination.

Another reason to postpone peace.

Sometimes I reached those milestones.

And for a little while...

I felt happier.

But it never lasted.

Life would happen again.

A new problem would appear.

Someone would disappoint me.

Or my own mind would find something new to worry about.

Slowly, I began to realize something.

If my peace depended on my circumstances...

it would always be temporary.

It wasn't until I began meditating that I noticed something surprising.

My life hadn't changed very much.

But I had.

Little by little...

I wasn't reacting to everything in the same way.

I still had difficult days.

I still got hurt.

I still worried.

But I was finding my way back much more quickly.

That was the beginning of understanding what inner peace really is.

Not a perfect life.

Not the absence of problems.

But the ability to return to yourself... even when life happens.

I still remember walking into the meditation center for the first time.

Something surprised me almost immediately.

No one asked what I did for a living.

No one asked where I came from.

No one even asked my name.

For the first time in a long time, I felt relieved.

I didn't have to introduce myself.

I didn't have to impress anyone.

I didn't even have to be noticed.

I could simply blend in and be with myself.

Later, during the meditation, as we chanted Om Namah Shivaya, I experienced a kind of peace I had never known before.

Looking back, I don't think it was a coincidence.

First came the permission to stop trying to be someone.

Then came the peace.

So if you've ever wondered why peace seems to disappear so easily...

you're not alone.

I wondered the same thing.

Why We Lose Our Peace

Life is always changing.

Some days feel light and joyful.

Others feel overwhelming.

A conversation doesn't go the way we hoped.

Someone says something that hurts us.

We don't sleep well.

We spend too much time reading the news.

We begin imagining everything that could go wrong.

Little by little, our mind becomes noisier.

Our body becomes more tense.

Before we realize it, we've lost our peace.

If you've ever wondered why this happens...

you're not alone.

It happens to all of us.

The important question isn't,

"How do I stop life from happening?"

It's,

"How do I find my way back when it does?"

The First Step Is Acceptance

One of the biggest lessons meditation taught me wasn't how to stop thinking.

It taught me to stop arguing with reality.

Acceptance doesn't mean liking what's happening.

It doesn't mean giving up.

It simply means beginning with what's true.

This happened.

I feel hurt.

I'm disappointed.

I'm anxious.

This is where I am right now.

Oddly enough, the moment we stop fighting the fact that we're here...

we finally have the freedom to decide what comes next.

Then We Zoom Out

When we're upset, our world becomes very small.

It feels as if this one problem is our entire life.

I've learned to gently remind myself:

There are infinite possibilities in the world.

When we're hurting, it's easy to believe we can no longer see them.

But that doesn't mean they aren't there.

I don't have to solve everything immediately.

I don't have to know exactly how everything will work out.

I simply need to take the next kind step.

That one reminder has helped me through some of the most uncertain moments of my life.

Practices That Help Me Return

Over the past twenty years, I've found that inner peace isn't something I achieve.

It's something I practice returning to.

Some of the things that help me are surprisingly simple.

A quiet walk in nature.

Meditation.

A cup of coffee on the porch before looking at my phone.

Gentle music.

Writing in my journal.

Taking one slow breath before reacting.

None of these practices remove life's challenges.

They simply remind my mind and body what peace feels like.

The more often I return...

the easier it becomes to find my way back.

Peace Isn't Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions I had was believing peaceful people never lose their peace.

Now I think the opposite is true.

We all lose it.

The difference is that, over time, we learn to recognize it sooner.

Instead of staying stuck for days...

we remember the way back.

Little by little...

our difficult days become shorter.

Our reactions become softer.

Our relationship with ourselves becomes kinder.

That, to me, is what inner peace really is.

A Gentle Reminder

If today happens to be one of those days...

please know you don't have to figure everything out right now.

Take one slow breath.

Allow yourself to begin exactly where you are.

There is no perfect way to do this.

Only the next small step.

And remember...

There are infinite possibilities in the world.
