Biophilic design is a concept based on humanity’s innate love of life and of all that is alive- whether in a person, a plant, an idea, or a social group. It is widely used and increasing in popularity within the building industry.

This idea is to create an enriched environment that has health, environmental, and economic benefits for the occupants. The connectivity to the natural environment is through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions.

You don’t have to constantly be outdoors to improve your health. Apart from healthy eating, the idea of exposure to indirect images indoors can often be just as effective to improve your wellbeing.

Here are some key features mimicking nature that helped me to create my biophilic designs:

Plants- one of the major contributions to connectivity to nature. It increases physical health, performance, and productivity and reduce stress

Colors- nature is really composed of a number of colors really. I basically use a range of tones in green, yellows, blues, neutral (black, white, cream), brown and mutables (orange, magentas, green).

Decor materials-clear glass is a great material that accentuates/highlights the surrounding décor. Natural materials on soft furnishing are ideal e.g. cotton, linen etc.

Open large spaces- create a spacious area mimicking the outdoors.

Elements - images or decor with textures, tones, and patterns

Simplicity - the key to only have a few simple and stunning items without much clutter.

Decor- cozy lounge, rug (natural material) and matching pillow designs

Water:- movement, sounds, touch, and sight of water creates a strong connection with humans. In design, it can be incorporated through fountains, wetlands, and aquariums. However, images of water can equally play a huge role to decrease stress and increase health, performance, and overall well being.

Wall art/ wall paper - an image depicting nature can be equally as effective as opposed to direct exposure externally to nature. What a stunning image to have in the home. I just instantly feel calm and relaxed looking at this amazing backdrop. You can find these images online- a good one is unsplash.com. Alternatively, contact a wall paper company to install one.

What an instant calm to your nerves. This feature wallpaper design is ideal for not only in the lounge area, but can just about be used in bedrooms, commercial places like foyers and reception areas. The list is endless.

Start with the tasks of:

1/ decluttering a room by clearing out all messy and unwanted items.

2/ applying new paints with colors of nature.

3/ plan your biophilia room design with a list of furniture and decor that would match all the elements of biophilia in the room

Here’s to a Healthy and Abundant Life.
