The dos and don'ts of being in the gym

The gym, a land of iron and goal crushing potential. It can either be a comfort zone or the most terrifying place one could step into. Like many recreational places one can go to pass time and/or self improve, the gym has a certain set of etiquette rules that everyone should follow. This helps to make the environment more comfortable, workouts more efficient and reaching goals more enjoyable for everyone.

Don't hog equipment.

Some days the gym can be overwhelmingly packed (maybe not during a global pandemic), but even on the days that it's not, don't hog equipment. You can only do so much with a certain amount of equipment, take dumbbells for example. You will only ever be able to hold two at a time, but you may be working with different weights in each set, in this instance it's okay to have four, if it's not too busy, so that you can quickly switch between the two. If you're super setting, try and find equipment that is close together as it's really not cool to leave a bench or machine with your gear on it while you take a pilgrimage to the other side of the gym to work those glutes.

Clean and put away equipment.

No-one likes approaching a workout machine to find it drenched in the fresh sweat of the previous user, glistening in all it's glory. Most gyms will have sanitizing stations that you can grab spray or wipes from, so be considerate, make use and clean what you use. Now, don't just clean what you use but put it away when you're done. Safety is a major priority in a gym environment and leaving equipment lying around can cause someone to trip over it or worse. Putting things away where they belong also makes it easier for the next person to find them, ever had a moment of frustration because you can't find the equipment you need?

Don't interrupt someone's set.

Interrupting someone in the middle of a set can be dangerous and aggravating. When someone is working out, they are generally very focused in order to keep themselves stabilized. If you interrupt them this could throw them off and cause injury if they lose muscle tension and drop it on themselves (or you). Barring injury, it would also throw off their performance and stop them from hitting optimal reps which would impact their overall results.

Respect other's privacy and space.

Not everyone wants to be ogled or hit on while they are working out (there are the exceptions but respect is first and foremost), most people are there to focus on themselves and reaching their goals. Give people enough space to workout so that you're not dropping weights on one another or smacking each other when performing large movements. The change-room is a place where this should be enforced even more, as you're more exposed and not everyone is comfortable with their bodies yet.

Don't pour your protein shake down the drinking fountain drain.

This is unsanitary and actually causes problems for the fountain, you should be cleaning out your shaker at home and every day. Wonder why gyms will charge the amount they do for upkeep on equipment? It's because of inconsiderate gym goers who pour protein down the fountain drain and don't take care of or put away equipment.

If you don't know, ask.

Your safety is a priority so if you're unsure of where or how to use a piece of equipment don't hesitate to ask one of the resident trainers or speak to the front desk and they will find the appropriate person to help you. This isn't limited to gym equipment, if you need the change-room, sanitizer stations or even a few tips on your workout, someone will be there to gladly assist you. If you think a piece of equipment is being used, simply ask those around you (who aren't busy with a set) if they are using it.

Encourage, don't shame.

The gym is a place for self improvement, you will see people of all shapes and sizes. For someone who is overweight it can be very intimidating to be in an environment that mostly consists of huge muscles and toned bodies. Whenever I see someone who is new to the gym, I'll cheer them on with an amped up and encouraging tone saying something like "You've got this! Crush those goals!" which tends to bring a smile to their face and more than likely see them return to keep up with their fitness.

There are many things one should be aware of when in the gym and over time you'll pick up on the more subtle ones. These are just some of the main ones to make you more comfortable and the gym a better place for everyone.
