Masturbation is a common sexual activity that many people engage in for entertainment and stress relief purposes. However, in certain cases, excessive or improper masturbation behavior can result in various health issues. One such condition is epididymitis, which is inflammation of the epididymis, a coiled tube located at the back of the testicles. In this article, we will explore the relationship between epididymitis and masturbation, including its causes, symptoms, and potential treatment options.

Epididymitis occurs when the epididymis becomes inflamed, usually due to infection or irritation. It can be categorized into acute epididymitis and chronic epididymitis.

1. Symptoms of acute epididymitis:

- Sudden high fever and elevated white blood cell count.

- Swelling and pain in the affected scrotum, accompanied by a sensation of heaviness.

- Tugging pain in the lower abdomen and groin, which intensifies when standing or walking.

- Enlarged and tender epididymis on the affected side.

- In cases of extensive inflammation, both the epididymis and testicle may swell, making it difficult to distinguish between the two, known as epididymo-orchitis.

- Thickening of the spermatic cord on the affected side, along with tenderness.

- Generally, acute symptoms gradually subside after about a week.

2. Symptoms of chronic epididymitis:

- Chronic epididymitis is more commonly observed, where some patients transition from an acute phase that wasn't completely cured. However, many patients do not experience a clearly defined acute phase, and the inflammation often develops as a result of chronic prostatitis or injury.

- Patients commonly experience dull pain in the affected scrotum, along with a sense of heaviness. The pain may radiate to the lower abdomen and the same-side groin area, and occasionally, secondary hydrocele may be present. Examination often reveals varying degrees of enlargement and hardening of the epididymis, along with mild tenderness. The ipsilateral vas deferens may also exhibit thickening.

Masturbation is a method for men to meet their physiological needs, but excessive masturbation can lead to complications. According to medical experts, epididymitis can indeed occur due to frequent sexual activity or excessive masturbation.

Frequent masturbation can trigger epididymitis.

Experts explain that the epididymis is located at the upper and posterior part of the testicle. The epididymal duct, measuring approximately 4-5 meters in length, forms the body and tail of the epididymis and assists in the maturation of sperm. Epididymitis is a common male reproductive system disorder, often caused by the spread of infection from nearby organs.

Symptoms of epididymitis include sudden pain in the scrotal area, swelling of the epididymis, significant tenderness, and possible fever. Acute epididymitis often develops as a result of infections in the urethra, prostate, or seminal vesicles, while chronic epididymitis is commonly caused by incomplete treatment during the acute phase.

Extensive survey data indicates that frequent sexual activity, particularly among adolescents and unmarried individuals, can lead to acute epididymitis. Additionally, excessive masturbation can also contribute to the occurrence of this condition. Furthermore, external pressure or compression can also trigger epididymitis, causing a sensation similar to the testicle being squeezed or crushed.

Next, acute epididymitis can also be caused by the spread of prostatitis and seminal vesiculitis along the vas deferens to the epididymis. Bloodborne infections are less common. Procedures involving urethral instruments, frequent catheterization, and the presence of a urinary catheter after prostatectomy can all easily lead to epididymitis. Inadequate treatment of acute epididymitis can result in chronic epididymitis.

Furthermore, external infections are another cause of epididymitis. The main cause of external infections is the unreasonable design of traditional men's underwear available on the market. Most men's underwear designs have a double-layered front that wraps the penis and scrotum together. This leads to the prolonged exposure of the penis and scrotum to a warm and humid environment, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and other microorganisms. This condition easily triggers prostatitis and subsequently leads to epididymitis, which is often overlooked.

Can epididymitis be cured? The answer is yes. Patients can achieve a good recovery from epididymitis through targeted treatment and adherence to the treatment plan. Chronic epididymitis is more commonly observed, with some patients transitioning to the chronic phase due to incomplete resolution of the acute phase. For chronic epididymitis, patients can choose herbal medicine such as Diuretic and Anti-inflammatory Pill to alleviate symptoms and cure the disease.
