Reading for 3-23 thru 3-29-20

The Center card for the week is Art.

This is one of the cards that differs from the more common Ryder Waite Smith Tarot systems. In the RWS decks the #14 of the Major Arcana (or Trumps) is found on the card of Temperance showing us Divine intervention ie: the angel on our shoulder. Like the time your car wouldn't start and you were late for work but avoided a bad car wreck or the time when that slow moving line at the grocery store gave you the chance to meet an important person in your life which you would have missed if you’d gotten into the “lucky” fast moving line. Temperance asks us to recognize beauty between the shadows. Art, on the other hand, asks us to look at every aspect in a given situation - right, wrong, illuminating, blinding, devastating or ecstatic - and find the combinations that work together to create the situation or outcome we choose to have. The energy of Art puts us into a sort of limbo where we can see many aspects. Maybe what we were afraid of isn’t really as bad as we thought or could it even be useful if seen or used differently? Maybe what we’ve relied on up to now falls short and reaching for it only pulls us backward. Imagine being at the apex of a huge wave. While you’re up there time slows and you have a chance to see everything around you. You can see the storm, the wind and the waves and choose the best way to handle your next move. Can the wind and waves be used together to pull you through? Can being above the troughs allow you to see a better direction? We're in a rapidly changing and frightening time. We’re experiencing now something most of us have only heard about in "other" places or times and while we’re doing our best to stay safely distanced, not only for our own protection but, more specifically, to reduce the spread of this new threat this can be a very good time to reflect on how our sense of safety can and has lulled us into a mindless almost robotic sense of invincibility.

The West card is the 7 of Cups.

This card plays well into the contemplative energy of Art. I often see this card as a “hangover” card. It speaks of having taken part in glorious fun and good times to the degree that the aftereffects are no longer simple or enjoyable. The tendency for the beginning of the week may be to hide under the covers. This could be one of those times when we’re feeling overwhelmed by everything around us and want to hide to avoid facing it. By mid week we feel clearer and more able to decipher all our options. We recognize the things which deserve our attention and action versus the things that are really just paper tigers. So, for the beginning of the week, give yourselves a break, binge watch some TV or clean out the garage or sleep, whatever helps you feel closer to normal. Then, as the week moves along take it slowly and try not to be intimidated by screaming, screeching headlines and social media painting everything in acid green panic and blame.

The East card is the Knight of Swords.

Perfect. We’ve wallowed, we’ve pondered and by the end of the week we should be feeling much more able to take in information and be decisive about how to begin taking action. This knight runs on brainpower. He’s the guy that has answers. We’ll need to be careful of becoming too single minded under this influence but all in all it’s a good, streamlined intellectual focus. We begin to see for ourselves what’s real, what’s fantasy, what’s hype and what’s just ridiculous. Wild animals infiltrating abandoned cities. Seriously!!???

In conclusion:

As the reality of coronavirus spreads inevitably throughout our lives we go through a series of stages in our experience of its enormity. The week likely begins with a desire to hide, deny, overreact and spin around in circles but then we find ourselves at that wave’s apex. From there things broaden out with realities making more sense and absurdities making little to none and perhaps even giving us a good healthy laugh. Finally, by week’s end we feel stronger, more decisive and way better about how to cope. The crisis is still a crisis but perhaps now we see more realistically who we are in the face of it, how we can deal with its implications and where to find the natural center in this broadening wave of challenges.

Have an illuminating week. Light, Tory

TIP for the week: There is no better cure in the world than a deeply felt, purely experienced and duly appreciated belly laugh. Now, go tickle a puppy.
