Each week when I do these readings I set up my reading space with black fabric, (for the photo, mostly but it also allows for a smooth, calm space to focus on the cards) make sure I have undisturbed quiet time; dogs are out, husband is at work/play/store/whatever, phone is off, etc… I begin with a quick grounding meditation and settle into a centered peace to ask for guidance in choosing the cards which will be most appropriate for the week ahead. I shuffle the cards with my intent in mind and spread them in a dealer’s “ribbon spread”. Then with eyes closed, I ask for the Center card, the West card and finally, the East card, reaching out to the spread, touching the cards and choosing the one that feels most fully under my finger tip, then sliding them into their positions. Before opening my eyes I return to a calm, centered state and do my best to sense whether the three cards I’ve chosen are the most fitting for the highest and best for all involved. Only then do I turn them face up and photograph them for the reading. There are times when I see the three cards before me and groan or breathe a sigh of relief but I always use the cards I’ve selected ”blindly”.

That said;

The Center card this week is the Princess of Wands.

The strength and courage of the princesses is in their innocence. As the first step in implementing their particular energy in our daily existence we look through the eyes of the new recruit. We’ve gained the raw information about how the energy works and we step forward, arms wide with a “show me” attitude. We’re hungry to discover how things will play out as we apply them to reality. Like going from classroom to the first day of work we’re anxious to see where everything fits into what we’ve learned. Also as with any new venture, part of the process is finding out where our knowledge doesn’t work, the pitfalls and obstacles that weren’t apparent in the instructions. It’s here where we begin to find the real learning. With the fiery Wands at the center this week we’re looking at dynamics. Ideas are flowing, creative planning gives us options we might not have thought of before and the playful assertiveness to give them a try.

The West card is the 10 of Cups.

The tens of the Tarot are full of all the energy of their suit and ready for direction, function and release. The Cups represent our emotions and with the ten we feel filled to the brim with them, so full in fact we may even be feeling fed up. This is where the creative and dynamic Princess of Wands is a great asset. With her open mind and propensity for trying new things (damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead) and the sheer fiery playfulness of her attitude we can shift the emotional overflow from frustration and annoyance to motivation. For those of us in the U.S. this week should be about gathering with family and friends to celebrate thanks for the bounty in our lives and the kindness of others but the dangers of close contact and this insidious, voracious virus that we face have tossed a wrench into things. This sort of conflict getting in the way of long tradition can certainly have those emotions up at the surface and ready to break out at any provocation. What it also does is give us the chance to renew the foundations on which the tradition was based. What a clear chance to rekindle the gratitude and disengage the stressful requirements that have built up around our expectations. How many of us have looked at family Thanksgiving gatherings of the past and groaned or rolled our eyes about having to face great aunt Maude who might break her cheeks if she smiled or cousin Harvey and his horrible off-color remarks and two-fisted drinking. This new challenge gives us the chance to look at the reasons for tradition and the changes that inevitably come with time.

The East card is the Princess of Swords.

I’m glad to see this card here. The airy Swords reflect our intellect. Their sharp edges delineate and clarify what the watery emotions want to blur and earthy practicality wants to keep from change. With both princesses combined, one of fire and one of air, we find the alchemy needed to burn away old customs with new ideas and speak those ideas with clarity and the confidence to be heard and understood. The crisp clarity of the Swords can also give us the edge to cut away old expectations leaving the way clear for new life to take hold in the roots of old traditions. A word of caution though, with a sharpness of clarity can come a sharpness of tongue. If that's what is needed, so be it but try to think first about repercussions and lasting impressions.

In conclusion;

Faced with the challenges of old tried and true traditions impacted by unforeseen obstacles we get creative. We find new ways to commune with family and honor old customs. We want to keep our loved ones safe from any health threat we may pose and also share the gratitude this time of year brings to mind and heart, so we create new ways to celebrate while keeping safe and healthy. We now have ways to communicate and be “together” without having to breath the same air. My family is having a virtual gathering and one of the things I’m most grateful for this year is the opportunity our newest technology gives us to step beyond limitations and achieve our goal to be together.

Have a creative and grateful week.

Light, Tory
