Thoth Tarot Deck

Each week when I do these readings I set up my reading space with black fabric (for the photo, mostly but it also allows for and smooth, calm space to focus on the cards) make sure I have undisturbed quiet time; dogs are out, husband is at work/play/store/whatever, phone is off, etc… I begin with a quick grounding meditation and settle into a centered peace to ask for guidance in choosing the cards which will be most appropriate for the week ahead. I shuffle the cards with my intent in mind and spread them in a dealer’s “ribbon spread”. Then with eyes closed, I ask for the Center card, the West card and finally, the East card, reaching out to the spread, touching the cards and choosing the one that feels most fully under my finger tip, then sliding them into their positions. Before opening my eyes I return to a calm, centered state and do my best to sense whether the three cards I’ve chosen are the most fitting for the highest and best for all involved. Only then do I turn them face up and photograph them for the reading. There are times when I see the three cards before me and groan or breathe a sigh of relief but I always use the cards I’ve selected ”blindly”.

That said;

The Center card for the week is the 8 of Swords.

As I open to the energy of this eight I have the feeling of getting pulled off-task by little distractions and unforeseen details. In fact, as I write this, one of my dogs is trying to get my attention for some ear scritches and shoving his snout up under my elbow. My sense of this energy is that of being able to clearly see the final outcome or resolution and having apparently unrelated issues crop up to divert my attention. Frustrating! This scenario can be as simple as your cat walking on your keyboard or batting at your mouse while you’re trying to work or it could be as significant as a boss who changes her mind about a project after you’ve done all the work or a fiance getting cold feet because of family opinions/objections. Whatever the case, we’re most likely dealing with fallout from the instability found in the previous card, the seven. It could be the lack of planning in allowing the cat to be in the room while you work, a detail or necessity that the boss failed to mention or the fiance’s fear of being honest about the feelings of their family.

The West card is the Queen of Cups.

Here we may get a glimpse of what the distraction is. The queens of the tarot are the teachers and nurturers, the feminine side of authority. With this card as an influence on the intellectual eight, my first question is; How have I been so accommodating or lenient (or maybe demanding?) that it’s led to getting tangled up in issues that don’t serve and support the task or project at hand? Although we may wish that the distraction will sort itself out so we can get back to what we intend to accomplish in the first place, it’s probably not going to go away. Give some real thought to how your intention to help or support or teach someone a lesson has gotten in the way of the things you’re trying to accomplish for yourself.

The East card is the 8 of Wands.

With this eight we begin to see Wands fire as productive rather than destructive. The flame that has in the past burned, injured or destroyed becomes the combustion that drives forward movement or the light that allows us to see what’s been in the shadows. Imagine Benjamin Franklin and his kite out in the thunderstorm. He has recognized that the powerful energy created by the “electricity” of the lightning in the storm can be useful if he can find a way to harness and direct it. Hence the string to lead the “fire” to the key. As the week winds down, we likely find ways to untangle, eradicate or harness the problems that have cropped up and in doing so, perhaps, discover a sort of electricity that could carry us to resolution.

In Conclusion;

This week we have a chance to look at just what knocks us off course. Issues, tangles and problems batter us around and we get the opportunity to dig up the strength to handle them. The cool thing is that in facing and handling the issues, we discover the fire –and power– we can harness in a given situation. Yes, it’s great to give and support and help others, up to the point where it deters us from our own work. Then it can easily become manipulation. In this case, with the fiery wands as an influence we may be able to harness enough energy to power up our intellectual and emotional batteries.

Have an internal combustion kind of week!

Light, Tory
