Thoth Tarot Deck

Each week when I do these readings I set up my reading space with black fabric (for the photo, mostly but it also allows for and smooth, calm space to focus on the cards) make sure I have undisturbed quiet time; dogs are out, husband is at work/play/store/whatever, phone is off, etc… I begin with a quick grounding meditation and settle into a centered peace to ask for guidance in choosing the cards which will be most appropriate for the week ahead. I shuffle the cards with my intent in mind and spread them in a dealer’s “ribbon spread”. Then with eyes closed, I ask for the Center card, the West card and finally, the East card, reaching out to the spread, touching the cards and choosing the one that feels most fully under my finger tip, then sliding them into their positions. Before opening my eyes I return to a calm, centered state and do my best to sense whether the three cards I’ve chosen are the most fitting for the highest and best for all involved. Only then do I turn them face up and photograph them for the reading. There are times when I see the three cards before me and groan or breathe a sigh of relief but I always use the cards I’ve selected ”blindly”.

That said;

The Center card this week is the 4 of Cups.

The fours of the Tarot are cards of consolidation and manifestation. In their positions on the path the beginnings acknowledgement and cooperation of the ace through three lead to a plateau at the four, of completion and reflection. The fours often represent a time of stasis or stagnation as we stop to take a look back at what we’ve created. Because this is the four of cups --our intuition, sensitivity and empathy-- we find ourselves immersed in rich and heady emotions. The feelings we feel now are full and deep to the point where we begin to seek the “relief” of action. We may even create some explosive encounters or situations tailored to light the fuse so we can get things moving. This can be as positive as it can be negative. For example; resentments and frustrations could come to a head bringing about the need for a confrontation or we could finally pull up the courage to ask for that raise or that loan or that date. Either way be ready for emotions to be rich, making the desire to act just about impossible to resist.

The West card is Death.

So here we find the catalyst for our big emotions. Although this card signifies loss and grieving it doesn’t necessarily refer to physical death. In fact, it refers as much to growth and rebirth as it does to closure and finality. Consider the butterfly. It begins as a plain caterpillar, constructs a coffin-like cocoon, completely transforms and emerges, reborn, as a beautiful and winged creature. That caterpillar had to die for the butterfly to be born. The insight we gain from accepting or even embracing the endings of things and acknowledging our grief for their loss allows us to turn ourselves toward the future, spread our wings and float off to the next transformation. As you can imagine the emotions around endings and beginnings of things are deep and particularly life changing.

The East card is the Prince of Pentacles.

As we grapple with the depth of emotion and change this week the desire to close off or shut down those big feelings will likely be as strong as the emotions themselves. The prince of the earth element is all about practicality, reality and progress. He is the airy part of earth and is about the least emotional of the cards. Under this influence feelings have no business getting in the way of all the details and work that demand his attention. Work can be a good and productive way to escape grief, anger, despair or regret but by diving into projects or assignments and dodging our feelings we cheat ourselves of the healing and wisdom that come with the acceptance or even embracing of difficult things.

In conclusion;

This is likely to be a week of release, loss and grief but transformation and new beginnings as well. We could be releasing old fears or criticisms and beginning new endeavors with confidence or letting go of a treasured friend, position or idea with a deep feeling of grief. Whatever the scenario, emotions will feature large and the desire to escape into practicality and nose-to-the-grindstone work will be strong. Try to keep in mind that honesty and compassion can soften even the sharpest of feelings and the acceptance of grief leads to transformation.

Have a poignant week.

TIP for the week; There is in the worst of fortune the best of chances for a happy change. Euripides.
