Mirror Dragon Tarot

Each week when I do these readings I set up my reading space with black fabric (for the photo, mostly but it also allows for and smooth, calm space to focus on the cards) make sure I have undisturbed quiet time; dogs are out, husband is at work/play/store/whatever, phone is off, etc… I begin with a quick grounding meditation and settle into a centered peace to ask for guidance in choosing the cards which will be most appropriate for the week ahead. I shuffle the cards with my intent in mind and spread them in a dealer’s “ribbon spread”. Then with eyes closed, I ask for the Center card, the West card and finally, the East card, reaching out to the spread, touching the cards and choosing the one that feels most fully under my finger tip, then sliding them into their positions. Before opening my eyes I return to a calm, centered state and do my best to sense whether the three cards I’ve chosen are the most fitting for the highest and best for all involved. Only then do I turn them face up and photograph them for the reading. There are times when I see the three cards before me and groan or breathe a sigh of relief but I always use the cards I’ve selected ”blindly”.

That said;

The Center card for this week is the 4 of Pentacles.

As I look at these three cards together the primary sense I get is one of the questions of “where do I go now with everything I’ve collected, earned, learned or released?” The fours of the Tarot represent a time of taking stock. Looking back on where you’ve come from and who you are in the present moment. Often at this stage we’ve come to a bit of a lull in the action and whether we get frustrated with a feeling of stagnation or feel grateful for a time to rest and recoup it’s a great time to really take stock of where we are now, what tools we either have or need and where we want to go with that. Because this is the four of pentacles, the aura around this slow or low energy time is about our materiality; time, energy, money and our physical bodies. Give some thought this week to finances and health. Are you doing the work but not reaping the rewards? Does your body feel lethargic or stressed and weak or energized and healthy? Do you have the material things in life that you need or maybe too much to handle? Look for where you feel most stable and comfortable, then adjust. Remove what drains you and honestly embrace things that bring you joy. When I say honestly I mean do your best to be honest with yourself about what those things are. Sometimes –okay, a lot of times– we take on work or financial responsibilities or situations where we’re the “grown-up” when it’s not really our job and that can be very detrimental to our health and happiness. Conversely, take a look at whether you’re expecting someone else to be responsible for your comfort and stability and begin to embrace your own strength and determination to stand on your own. In this way you’re no longer under the control or intentions of others.

The West card is the 2 of Swords.

Here we find the recognition of our own intellectual clarity and the ability to choose decisively. The swords represent our cognitive thought, written words and communication, and the twos are cards of realization and definition. Given that this week we’re standing on the plateau of “what now”, it might be a good idea to make a written list of pros and cons, wants, needs and things to let go of. Once that list feels complete, if you can, voice those desires and convictions clearly. One good thing about the swords and the pentacles is that they’re less likely to carry the emotional weight or sting that the cups and wands bring so stepping into communications with others can be calmer and more direct. I find that conversations about our material needs work much better without the emotional aspects of neediness, fear, anger or desire and when we can deactivate the hot buttons that trigger those feelings we can get a lot more accomplished.

The East card is the Hermit.

The Hermit represents our ability to access the Light of Wisdom in the midst of our material, physical form. I believe that we come into physical form so that our souls have the experience of identity. When the soul is not encased in the cellular structure of a body it doesn’t have the opportunity to experience all the rich, heady, grand and expansive emotions, physical sensations or the cognitive recognition of being a separate entity. Our physical experiences are amazing learning tools for the soul. Pain, love, fear, laughter, the taste of sugar or cod liver oil, the smell of roses or ginger, or old fish, the beauty in a sunrise or the intense feeling in the eyes of a lover, the powerful sense of grief when we lose someone dear to us… All these things are absent when the soul is not within a physical body. It is the light of wisdom that we’re part of a Universal form having the learning experience of being 3D and cellular that the Hermit seeks to remind us of. He carries the light of love and Universal connection in his lantern to lead us through the “darkness” of physical form and materiality.

In conclusion;

If you haven’t already thought about a New Years resolution, this week is a good time to consider it. Our thinking will likely be clear and our communication effective and the lull in the action shown by the four of pentacles gives us a bit of a reprieve and some time to think. The really cool thing about this week is the wisdom we have access to when we open to the calm realization that we’re not really out here in the Universe alone. The Hermit reminds us that we’re part of a cosmic Whole and the wisdom of that whole is part of us. We need only to quiet our mind and listen.

Have a creative week!
