When it comes to weight loss, there are several hurdles to overcome.

Depending on your experience and current mindset — it can be a successful journey but it might also be filled with many pitfalls.

No matter what we decide to do in our life, obstacles are part and parcel of the journey.

What I have learned from my own experience is that there is no better way to understand yourself and overcome any inhibitions than when you move towards achieving something meaningful.

There are so many unknowns, and each time we hit a point and stop — it allows us the space to uncover our true self and the extent we’d go towards finding the answers.

It is a testament to our mindset, and this is no better way to keep training it for future experiences.

Habits take about one month of effort to jell and become part of your lifestyle.

Making an effort every single day is what guarantees success.

8 of the biggest excuses that can prevent fat loss

1. You don’t like healthy food and find it bland and tasteless

2. It’s expensive to eat healthy long term.

3. You don’t know where to start.

4. You don’t like exercise.

5. You don’t know what training to perform.

6. There isn’t enough time in the day for preparing food.

7. You want unhealthy food too much.

8. You can’t be bothered with the effort involved.

Do any of these sound familiar to you? Are they part of your excuse, or someone close to you?

I believe all of these eight excuses are in and of themselves essential to address, but the critical issue here is the primary inhibitor that is stopping you.

Perhaps you don’t even know what this fear is, and that’s why it’s so hard to pinpoint.

But, there is one hurdle we all have when starting any journey, and that’s outlined below.

The number 1 hurdle to weight loss is:

One: Lack of self-belief in achieving the goal

Lack of self-belief lies dormant in one or more of the tiny excuses above.

You think deep down that you don’t have the knowledge, commitment, and drive to go all in and achieve those weight loss results you want badly enough.

These are all self-limiting beliefs and stop us in our tracks, paralysing us with fear and self-doubt.

I’ve experienced this on far too many occasions myself. It’s frustrating and a significant roadblock to achieving goals.

The question now stands as to what we can do about this lack of self-belief and how we can overcome it to achieve our goal.

Here is what I’ve used time and time again that doesn’t fail me.

I do hope it helps you as well.

One: Search for what you want, not what you don’t want

Write a list of the things you want.

Write your weight in numbers.

What do you want to wear?

How do you want to feel and look when you’ve achieved this goal.

Visualisation is key to igniting your imagination of to look forward to in the future.

Think of that gorgeous dress, bikini, those muscles and that flat belly.

Keep these images within your reach whenever things begin to get hard.

These positive thoughts about what you want can help neutralise negative pushbacks.

It’s vital to keep thinking about the outcome, making the hard work well worth the effort.

Two: Create a beautiful imageboard

Put images of what clothes you want to wear, what kind of body you aspire to have, who inspires you, the places you wish to visit - anything else that will entice you to keep moving towards your goal.

I love putting affirmations on my wall and even images of athletes I admire for their hard work, tenacity and positive results.

These are the traits I want to help uncover in own self.

I know that athletes have a mind for success, and nothing stops them. We can tap into that power through modelling their behaviours.

Put this board somewhere you can see every day to remind you of what’s to come.

Three: Start small, and start today

Even if you do one thing, start it today and stick with it.

Then, as your confidence grows, add more to the list.

Soon enough, it will become second nature to you.

To celebrate the wins, they all add to something substantial long term, no matter how small.

Four: Get support

Instil the trust of a close friend, sibling or relative you can talk with regularly.

When you have a bad day, instead of reaching for the fridge door, permit yourself to call up a trusted friend.

Pour out your heart, and let it all out.

It’s essential to have people on your team along any challenging journey.

One day, you could be a support person for someone else who needs it most.

Five: Remember that weight loss takes some time, embrace the journey

We all want results right now, and when they don’t appear, there is an even bigger chance we will give in and go back to our old ways.

The successful people are the ones that stick to it through thick and thin.

They go out there, search far and wide for the answers, and get them.

Yes, it’s hard and challenging at times, but you are capable of this and much more.

Keep jumping over those forks in the road.

It’s not only about the results; it’s about the journey ahead that uncovers something within you that was lying dormant.

Keep going until you get there.

I hope that I have given you some underlying factors that stop most people from losing weight.

We all have moments that we lack self-belief, and to overcome this, we must challenge ourselves step by step.
