The word “fasting” comes from the Latin Fastus, which means “freely given.” Fasting is the act of voluntarily abstaining from food, drink, or both. It’s commonly used to promote spiritual and physical wellness.

Fasting can be undertaken deliberately and under strict guidelines, or it can be a response to an external cue, such as religious observance or an impending special event

The word “fasting” is often used interchangeably with the word “intermittent fasting”. But fasting is not just eating a few meals per day and then fasting the rest of the time.

In the strictest definition, fasting means you go without food for a period of time. So, it’s not fasting without food but rather restricting food intake.

Fasting and the digestive system

Fasting is considered to have a direct impact on maintaining the health of the digestive system, as fasting is important to regenerate the cells in it, as well as increase the metabolism process, and this has a role in revitalizing the digestive system and helping it to function better and protect against diseases that may affect it.

When fasting, some chemical changes occur in the brain, which helps maintain its health, as during fasting proteins are produced, which helps activate nerve cells in the brain, in addition to producing ketones, which are important sources of energy for nerves, which protects the brain from exposure to some diseases. Like Alzheimer's and other diseases.

Weight loss

Fasting is considered one of the effective times for those who want to lose weight and reach the ideal weight, provided that they do not overeat after breakfast, and it is preferable to eat foods that are low in fat and do not contain high calories while making sure to eat a lot of water between breakfast (fasting end time) and suhoor (time before fasting start).
