Removing Ear Wax at our private Sutton Coldfield clinic

A little ear wax is good for you!

Throughout life we are taught that moderation is a good thing, and often this proves to be a great philosophy, ensuring that overindulgence does not cause us problems.

So, bearing that in mind, let’s talk ear wax! Did you know that ear wax is a natural cleanser which helps to clean out dead skin cells, hair, dust, dirt and create a layer of protection for our ears?

Ear wax also has been shown to have antibacterial and antifungal properties and can prevent your ears from feeling itchy or dry. So far, so good! Sadly, however, a build-up or accumulation of ear wax can lead to an uncomfortable, unpleasant, and sometimes painful experience which may potentially lead to “that bunged up feeling” and even to hearing loss. Many of us will know how debilitating hearing loss can be, in social, professional and safety situations, so this is definitely a case of moderation is good, excess is most certainly not.

Look for ear wax removal Sutton Coldfield if you encounter the same problem.

It may surprise you to learn that ear wax can be more common in those who wear hearing aids, as the aids themselves can prevent the normal movement of ear wax out of the ear which itself can stimulate the glands into producing more ear wax, thinking it is protecting the organ – and so a damaging cycle of excess is created.

Hearing aid wearers may also find that ear wax can damage their devices as ear wax can naturally find it’s way into the vents and receivers of the device. Some people think that their hearing aid is failing, when actually it is simply a matter of wax build up. It is a good idea to talk to your Audiologist about this and get your ears checked regularly for a build-up of wax. They will also advise on the most effective way of cleaning your aid to maximise it’s efficacy.

The one thing that an Audiologist will never recommend is that sufferers try to remove ear wax themselves by gouging around with an ear bud or any other implement. This can cause damage to the ear drum and sensitive skin in your ears, possible infections which can lead to real – even permanent - hearing loss and damage. All Audiologists will have a ream of horror stories of people using imaginative means to try and remove wax themselves, but really, whilst there are ear drops available from the Pharmacy which can help to soften the ear wax, we recommend Micro-Suction as the best way for ear wax to be removed. This process is performed best at an audiology clinic by a trained professional practitioner and is a fast, painless and safe procedure which provides instant relief.

The procedure begins with an examination of your ear canal using high-definition video otoscopy, from which an assessment of your treatment will be made, and the procedure conducted.

Using a Medical Grade ENT Microscope (giving us 25 X Magnification) we can see what we are doing all the way through the procedure.

The price for an earwax assessment and removal is from £80.

If you are fortunate enough to not have wax, then we only charge £40 for the appointment.

As Qualified Audiologists we will discuss and investigate why your ears are feeling blocked, which could be due to an underlying problem.

At Steven Hale Hearing we have invested in the best quality and most modern tools to remove your ear wax effectively, safely and painlessly. We also offer you the opportunity to see before and after photographs of your ear canal so that you can really see the difference – but some people aren’t keen and will simply take Steven’s word for the fact that it has been successful! Of course, you will also immediately feel the difference yourself.
