a letter to 2020

Dear 2020,

Really? We're less than halfway through and already we've been through a whirlwind of major troublesome yet historical events. It seems everyday bring news of yet another event. While it has been one thing after another, all of us are forming history and once we come through this, hopefully we will become stronger.

2020, you have brought fear, uncertainty, plentiful time, anger, injustice, and many other prominent feelings. From the start of the year with the news of the pandemic of Covid-19 in which we all had to lock down and practice social distancing from one another, to the later exposure of police brutality and injustice weaved into our system, we can see how each and every event was connected and linked together.

Covid-19 was/is something we ALL have to deal with together and in a strange way it has brought us all closer; despite us having to keep separated from each other in person. Even though physical connection was greatly reduced, we quickly found new and innovative ways to make it work...because we all need social interaction. Phone calls,Facetime, and all other social media platforms became our main way of communication. One day we will say, "remember having to use Zoom all the time?!" Many people have had to work from home and others had to study and now even graduate high school or university online! With the help of brilliant people, technology has proved very useful during these weird times. For the first time in a long time for many, the onset of Covid-19 and the need for lock down has created the time that many families needed to actually slow down and spend time together.

Even though Covid-19 has brought about some cool things, for many people it has brought trials and heartbreak like never before. In fact all of our hearts have been hurt; because when one person hurts it should hurt us all. People have lost their lives, lost the their loved ones, lost jobs and struggled more than ever with depression, loneliness and other mental health problems. Besides many mental health problems, cases of physical and emotional abuse have gone through the roof. Once again, Covid-19 has exposed just how many problems we really have in our society. From the beginning with the slow reaction of leaders in slowing the spread of the virus, the amount of false news as well as the shocking uncovering of racism that was already build into the system that was never set up in favor of people of color, just showed how many issues we really have to fix.

And so 2020, it has been a year for the history books! Future generations will look onto this year as the catalyst for change. Even though it's been a rough ride, every little event has created awareness and exposed society for everything that it really is. People can no longer hide behind any excuse, no one can pretend to be too busy to listen, and no one can say anymore that racism, prejudice and hatred don't exist in our country. We have a long way to go but this year has given us the push that we needed to start this journey in unity.

P.S. you've really taken us on a wild ride. Maybe consider giving us all a little break? At least a little time to catch up.

Sincerely,

a post-millennial
