Hibiscus Rosa Sinesis

Hibiscus is a truly magical flowering plant with a long and proud history within herbal medicine. It's countless medicinal uses are recorded back as far as Ancient Egyptian records. Modern academic research has compiled extensive evidence bases to support what the Alchemists & Healers have known for thousands of years - that Hibiscus has profound healing effects on the human body.

The International Journal of Pharmacognosy and Chemistry published an excellent and informative 2021 open access review (*link at bottom of page) of Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis evidencing the (and I directly quote) "significant therapeutic options against various degenerative diseases such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes & cancer"

Another study reports "The pharmacological activities reported by Hibiscus rosa sinensis are immense and include its proven effectiveness in preventing & fighting against Cancer, Type-2 Diabetes, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure"

When I first began reading Journal articles about the Hibiscus Flower I was amazed. Amazed at how little known it is. Amazed that I had never heard of it before. Amazed that so many apparently complex and severe diseases could be allieviated by consumption of it. The studies in regards to cancer particularly caught my attention, given that it is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9.6 million deaths (1 in 6) in 2018 [WHO, 2021].

The cancer burden is a global epidemic which exerts tremendous physical, emotional and financial strain on individuals, families, communities and health systems. Many health systems in low- and middle-income countries are least prepared to manage this burden, and large numbers of cancer patients globally do not have access to timely quality diagnosis and treatment.

Further to this - Western Medicine's 'treatment' of cancer is still standardized as chemo and radiotherapies. Both of these are highly toxic to the human body and create even further stress on an already compromised system.

Disease. Dis-ease. The opposite of ease. A lack of ease within the body. The word itself explains the both the problem and solution. It almost sounds too simple to be true, doesn't it? Like, far too simplistic. Haven't we been taught from the youngest age of the complexities of the human body. Modern medicine has had us believing that ill health is a lottery and that we are at the mercy of medicine to rectify any wrong that may befall our bodies. If there is no medicine (or surgery) then we are told what has happened within our body is incurable and we are left hopeless and to accept inevitable degeneration and death.

It pains me greatly that this is indeed the general understanding of health on this planet. Why? Because it couldnt be further from the truth. Every single thing you interact with, consume and even give thought to is either contributing to your health or detracting from it. The field of Epigenetics has dispelled the myth that 'faulty' genetics are determining our state of health. Stress is the only cause of disease. If your body is not in a state of ease - it is in stress.

Now, we give particular diseases names, because they were caused by a particular pattern of stress. Let's take type 2 diabetes as an example and simplify. We could talk in detail about a very complex biological relationship between cells, about insulin, the pancreas etc etc. Or we take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

When a person consumes sugar - it causes great upset and imbalance within the body (stress). The body has to work harder to return to balance (homeostasis). This is stress. Anything causing the body's systems to work harder is stress. If it it occasional stress - our bodies can handle the pressure and return to balance seemingly effortlessly. This occasional and minor stress may even be beneficial to us. (Think of the analogy of working out muscles and making them stronger - we put them under controlled stress). If, however, we are continually eating sugar and continually putting the body under stress - it grows weak and weary. Too much stress, or chronic stress will eventually cripple the system.

Our body responds to the environment that we create for it. Arguably our body is an extrenal representation of our inner world. It represents the thoughts we think, how we feel and how we treat it. In this way we are not so dissimilar to plants. Orchids are a fine example. Orchids require very particular conditions to thrive in. They require a particular balance of temperature, humidity, soil ph, sunlight and water - to name most of the most basic needs. If any one of these conditions falls outwith the perameters of balance, the Orchid will wither. The withering is not bad luck. It is not due to any rare genetic condition. It is a direct result of the environment it is currently in.

Of course it is possible that the Orchid came from a sickly genetic line. If the mother plant was also in poor conditions - then it will not create strong and healthy offspring. However, as the field of Human Epigenetics is currently proving - what we do in the present has more influence over our genes than any predisposition.

So. Back to the withering Orchid.

The withering is a symptom. A symptom that it's needs are not being fulfilled and that change is necessary. If change does not take place, the symptom will worsen. If change still does not take place - the Orchid will die.

Some humans are highly sensitive and are very much like Orchids. They will become ill quickly if subjected to harsh conditions. Others are more like dandilions. They can thrive almost anywhere and they can withstand many stressors before showing any symptoms of ill health. But take away enough of their basic needs - they will surely die.

What are our basic needs?

We have many that can fall under the categories of Physical, Emotional, Mental & Spiritual. Physical needs include things like nutrition, breath, water, sunlight, physical connection / touch. Emotional needs include things like feeling valued, feeling free to express our truth. We need mental stimulation - learning new things and expanding is a fundamental need that is often overlooked. Spiritual needs are often misunderstood as a need to subscribe to a particular faith or religion. It can simply invove feeling connected to the wider world, to nature or the energy that connects living beings.

Our modern lifestyles leave us lacking many of our basic needs - and worse still - have us living in perpetual fear / survival mode. We are constantly on high alert - often surrounded by constant noise and overstimulation. We are consuming food that is not real food. We are drinking sugar instead of hydrating with water. We are breathing fast & shallow instead of slowly and deeply. We are constantly thinking negative thoughts about others & about ourselves with no awareness of the impact this has on our body chemistry. Many of us have adopted sloth like lifestyles immersing in comfort rather than being active and filled with vitality and so on.

Basically - we are under more stress than our bodies can counter.

Enough prolonged stress for enough time = illness and disease.

This includes cancers. It is a signal from our body to tell us that we must change our conditions. Nothing more. Nothing less.

So. Whilst we are working on changing the patterns that have been leading us down the path of ill health - is there a medicine that can assist us? During the past year I have read all available research on the Hibiscus flower. And the findings are amazing.

It has antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and wound healing effectiveness. It is cardioprotective, stimulates healthy blood circulation (thereby helping to regulate female menstruation), promotes hair growth and is anti-anaemia. It has no known toxicity levels.

Hibiscus extract has been proven effective in test tube & rat studies thus far against cancer - most notably on resistant type triple-negative breast cancer, prostate cancer, lymphoma, melanoma & leukaemia at reasonably low concentrations. It selectively induces apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells whilst healthy cells remain intact. (Dandelion root, lemongrass, white tea and long pepper extracts have also been shown to prompt apoptosis in cancer cells). One of the most interesting (albeit awful) studies I found was one in which they took two groups of rats and subjected them to toxic heavy metals and high dose radiation to induce melanoma. One of the groups were dosed for three weeks prior with Hibiscus extract. The group that received no Hibiscus ALL developed melanoma and died. The group which received the extract had very different results. 70% of them showed NO ILL EFFECTS WHATSOEVER.

I ploughed through countless other studies which showed Hibiscus to be protective against cancers and actively inducing cell death in cancer cells. Now - of course I am in no way trying to influence or advise anyone suffering a cancer diagnosis on what they should do in regards to treatment. What I want to do is share this knowledge with as many people as possible so that they can make an informed decision about what to do. If I was told there was cancer in my body - would I be consuming as much Hibiscus tea as I could? Absolutely I would.

Several studies have already proved that Hibiscus possess analgesic, antioxidant and anti fungal properties and that it has the ability to remove free radicals that can damage the DNA. It is proven as an effective anti diabetic medicine, is gastroprotective, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, and is an immunomodulatory. It has also been proven effective as an antidepressant and a hair growth promoter. Daily intake has been shown to significantly reduce total cholesterol, hypertension. Anthocyanins (health regenerating compounds) are found in abundance in the Hibiscus flower.

One of its other excellent benefits is as an antituissive (cough suppressant) and an antipyretic. This means it naturally lowers body temperature - which is especially good if you are suffering a fever or live in a hot country.

Pharmaceutical companies are currently working on producing a standardised drug using Hibiscus extract. However, this will take many years before it is created and tested. What we do know right now, however, is that Hibiscus has no known toxicity or negative side effects (unless you are suffering from low blood pressure or low body temperature - then sensible caution should be applied).

I really hope that this information has been informative and proves useful. I'm certain that it will and this is why I have taken the time to share it with you. Please, please share it with others. I am passionate about gathering and sharing knowledge that will actively improve your health, wellbeing and quality of life. If you can afford to buy me a cup of tea as a thank you - this would truly make my day. Every little bit of income I receive allows me the time to do more research and bring you more information like this - which I hope will save countless lives.
